Someone from UAB recently contacted me about my old position there. I politely listened to the list of enticements meant to tempt me to come in and interview. I would be working with a few of the same folks as before, but in a “bigger and better environment.” There would be better benefits, more pay, more “free reign to create.” While flattering, I declined. When asked why I would not be interested in coming back, I informed the caller that even though I hold no ill will against the department, I did not appreciate how I was treated by Higher Management when I was laid off. I explained that I am very happy with my current position; I feel as though I truly belong at ibml and love my job very much. I further explained that UAB simply could not afford me, because only an obscene amount of money could tempt me into considering leaving ibml. After a long pause, I heard “OK, thank you for your time. Best of luck in your endeavor.”

I loved the idea being at UAB. I Hated my position there. I loved my team. I hated that my department was looked down on consistently by higher management. I hated being talked down to by someone whose name had certain initials at the end. I’m sure some of them were brilliant in something, but they were assholes to me and my coworkers for no reason other than they thought they were better than us.

When I worked for UAB, I felt unappreciated. I don’t feel that here. I have a Great Boss and a fantastic team who both appreciate my efforts. My users (most of them anyways) welcome my help and are appreciative. I know I am a pain in the ass to deal with sometimes, but I am generally a nice person and have no trouble getting along with anyone here. Yes, I will always butt heads with someone, and do frequently with resident troublemakers, but here I don’t feel as if my job is in danger if I stand up for myself and defend my work. This is a great company. I have a great boss. I have great coworkers.

I love my freaking job.

ibml gives me what UAB, MedSeek, NSR, and so many others couldn’t: a place to belong. Though I will admit that KnownHost came close. Seriously I have nothing but love for those guys. But all things considered, I wouldn’t trade this job for anything in the world.
