The Little Things – Afternoon Thoughts

Raindrops on roses –

The adorable way toddlers seem to swallow their words when they speak. The taste of apple pie straight out of the oven.

– And whiskers on kittens.

The feeling of water running down your throat after a hefty home workout. Even the crinkles ’round the eyes of your lover when they Smile.

These are a few of my favorite things.

As time passes, we experience more and more things, and we relish the events of life less and less because hey, we saw or felt or went through that thing a thousand times before. But today, I ask myself, does it matter how many times you’ve experienced something good before? Is the number indirectly proportional to how much you’re supposed to enjoy it?

No, it shouldn’t matter. And no, it isn’t.

Research has proven that your desires for the future have the Potential of making you unhappier. I’m not saying that having aspirations isn’t a good thing, but it’s also important to appreciate what you have and enjoy at present.

When was the last time you looked at a good friend and revelled at being given the chance to be in their company? Or a time when you just sat alone, smiling to yourself, saying, “God, am I blessed”?

As someone fresh out of the sinking abyss of nothingness that doctors call depression (I may delve more into that later on), the realization that life is so full of little things that have the potential to make you smile was one of chain links that I held on to in order to overcome my illness. No, it wasn’t easy to understand at first – and you may start hating people who tell you to “look at the bright side” of things – but once you open your eyes wider and just actually look, you’ll slowly get it.

Ever since I understood the power of little things in this world, I became more aware of life’s potential to be great.

If you are experiencing a trough in your life at present, let me tell you this: Hold on to your little things. No matter how small they are, no matter how trivial they may be. A smile, a memory, a real-life or fictional person, all these little things can drive you to the right direction. Take a break from thinking too much about the future and fate, and hold on to your little things. Hold on to them so tight until they become your foundation to happier things.
