a heartbeat.

a Heartbeat.

Sitting in class, idly,
Just watching people come and go,
Stretching my legs,
So they draped over yours,
As I moved closer,
Pushing my chair closer to yours,
So that I felt more at ease,
That’s when I felt it,
A suddenly rapid heartbeat.

Upset,
Panicking,
And you come rushing through the door,
Sliding right next to me,
With an ease, I had never seen before,
Holding my hands,
And there it is again,
That abruptly rapid heartbeat.

Standing huddled,
Everyone rushing to go home,
My eyes roam,
Hugging each person as I go,
Finally,
I find you,
Still packing your bag,
So I begin to lag,
You spin around to see me there,
Frozen,
So you begin to stare,
And I notice it just before you begin to walk away,
That, goddamned, rapid heartbeat.

We are hugging,
For no good reason,
Simply because I walked up to you,
Wrapped you inside my arms,
And as your arms begin to slide around me too,
There it comes,
Right on cue,
The silly stupid rapid heartbeat.

Sitting on my bed,
Our bodies wrapped together,
And that rapid heartbeat,
Can feel one beating at the same pace,
The whole thing seeming clearer,
Now that you’re nearer,
You’re the trigger,
And with this new vigor,
I let my lips fall to yours,
As I implore,
Asking you to let fall,
That barrier, that wall,
And as you concede,
My heartbeat feels complete.
