36 Crazyfists South African Tour [Interview]

36 Crazyfists on tour in support of Lanterns

During their mind-blowing performance at Krank’d Up festival in 2015, vocalist Brock Lindow of Alaskan metal legends 36 Crazyfists, promised their fans that they will return to South Africa. Never letting their fan base down, Brock has kept his promise, and the band will be making their way back to our shores in April 2018 for two exclusive club shows: Mercury Live in Cape Town and Rumours Rock City in Johannesburg in support of their new album, Lanterns.

I had a quick chat with Brock to find out more about the album and their current tour:

Perhaps belated, but congrats on the new release, Lanterns. How has the journey been since starting the project until now?

It’s great to be mid-cycle and supporting the album. Playing the songs live to our fans now that it’s been out for a bit feels great.

So, this is quite a personal album, and you’ve said: “These songs are all about struggling to locate [the light] and trying to find the way to move forward and get past what has mentally hampered you in your life”. How was the writing process like, and were there any specific things happening in your lives at the time that steered the album in this direction?

I was at a pretty dark and low place in my life at the time of writing for Lanterns, so thankfully my support group and the music were there for me to express myself and release some of my demons onto the page.

Looking at the video for Better to Burn, there’s a constant switch between, can I say, chaos and these almost serene, calm scenes – can you elaborate a bit around the idea behind this?

It’s a song about letting go, moving forward and seeing through eyes that have seen some darkness but allowing yourself to feel the darkness as well. The calm scenes are really where I go to find my peace, Alaska has provided many moments in my life to clear my mind and breathe in the fresh glacial air

And how has the tour been so far? Any stand-out shows?

The tours have all been great. Europe was just amazing.

From Alaska to super-hot South Africa! We are very much looking forward to your tour here! What’s it about our country that made you want to come back here?

It’s a beautiful exotic place to us, the people were so incredible and the Krankd Up festival was so fun, we had to come back!

Glad you did! So, you will be playing at Mercury Live in my home city of Cape Town! That’s a favourite venue among locals, what can your fans expect from your set there?

It’ll be a much more intimate vibe, so I’m looking forward to the connection with our people in a room like that.

Lastly, we have a couple of amazing metal bands in South Africa, what can you guys tell them about surviving the industry and staying relevant for so many years?

It’s all ups and downs, just ride it all out, there will be good days and bad days but ultimately it’s the best job in the world!!
