Malkop 2016 is Almost Here!

The most exciting Festival to come to the West Coast is Malkop Rock Festival. Now in its second year, the 2016 festival promises to be one for the books! With a line up bigger and better than most other events, you have no choice but to pack your bags and road trip to this special festival.

I caught up with Dobbelsteun, who is on the line up, to chat about the festival:

Hi, thanks for chatting to DPC – So, who is Dobbelsteun?

Dobbelsteun is a group of friends making music, living life and enjoying each and every moment of this awesome trip we are on. On vocals and guitar acoustic and electric is Johan van der Merwe, on bass we have Marais Visser, drums we have Zelmari Munnik (yes it is a girl) and on the other electric we have Wimpie Agenbag.

You are from Vredendal, correct? Did you all grow up there? And how did you guys form the band and who are your fans?

We are from Vredendal, yes. Some of us grew up here. Dobbelsteun formed about 3 years back. What would have been a once-off gig, but started this awesome journey. We were completely different back then. Last year December, Dobbelsteun got complete new members with the lead vocalist Johan the only original member. We do original as well as cover songs. Our fan base is so wide. We do a lot of different genre which means the fan is from young to old.

Awesome, so what type of music do you make and who comes up with the lyrics and composing?

We do rock, pop, folk, Afrikaans, bit of blues, country to name some of them. Our own music has a bit of rock vibe in it. Johan compose the most of the songs, lyrics are written by the whole band and the lead vocals girl, Anja Visser.

So, now on to the festival… What is a ‘malkop’?

Malkop is someone who is crazy as …. (Fill in your own) hehe. A person who can enjoy each crazy ass moment with friends or on its own. Someone who is different from the rest and don’t give a damn.

Now in its second year, what can we expect from Malkop this year?

Well, the first year was epic. We had the time of our life. This year we can only expect the best. A “jol” for all!

Cool! Who else on the line up are you excited to see?

Well we all are excited to see Fran. We are also looking forward to oom Koos, Twee, Spoegwolf, Ryno to name some of them. The whole line up to be exact is what we are excited to see.

We will be live just after Francois at 1am Friday night

What do you like most about the West Coast (Weskus)?

Being born here, it is in our veins. The see, the people and the views.
