5-Days In Bucharest

5-days in Bucharest!

Back to Bucharest after visiting Dracula’s Castle in Bran, Romania….so now, it’s 5-days in Bucharest!

I really don’t know much about Bucharest…and I’m probably not gonna learn much about Bucharest because I simply want to mingle with the people.

Unlike all my other previous stops, I’m not suburban on this one. I’m right smack dab in the middle of the tourism district. And yet, I don’t plan on changing my approach. I want to meet local people, eat with them and just enjoy! And that I will do!

One thing I did do out of the norm. I let the waiters and bartends have their way with my pallet on occasions….much to my delight I might add.

My first Beer was ‘Ursus’ draft. First night in Romania after the airline left my luggage in Warsaw, Poland. I deserved it! The beer not the lost luggage. This was good, and it didn’t stop with just one. But, just like most other places in Europe, the beer is sort of pricey.

There was more to come….the next day I headed to Brasov where I visited Dracula’s Castle, indulged in more beverage, ate American Romanian Food and fell in the snow.

Tuborg!!!! I love and drank a lot of Tuborg! On tap and from the bottle….. Of course there was Heineken which has a local brewery and there were several other samplings from micro-breweries that fancied my taste buds. Awesome!!

Bucharest

Then there was this place called “The Boundary” that’s where we meet Adrian. I think Adrian is more than just a bartend….he seems to be the cog that makes this place run, other than the owner who is American.

First there was a Tuborg, then a little known craft that was a bit on the forgetful side and before he brought out the big gun, he helped me select a ‘house platter of various cuts of meats’ done Romanian style. I started eating and before I knew it, my plate was empty!!!

Then, then he brought out the ‘Specialty’. Romanian Vodka ‘Dom’. It can’t be purchased outside of Romania! I never knew that Vodka could taste so friggin’ good!!!! I don’t know if you put it in a mixed drink, I had it straight-up and LOVED IT!!!

It wasn’t available in the airport either!!!! Dang it!!

Ah!!!! Here’s a goodie. Another attempt, well I’m not sure ‘another attempt’ at American Fare because this is really TexMex. This is a serving of Nachos from this beererie….I had a Sunday Summer Sex craft beer.

Efes Restaurant….Lebanese food. It’s strange the way they do this. You order on one side of the building and wait. Once your food is ready, then you are instructed to the cashier on the other side of the building before you can get your food. I don’t mind paying before, but I can’t until I’m directed. Others seemed to be familiar with this way of life. P.S. The building wasn’t that big….

Oh!!! There was this other restaurant that a lovely young lady is outside in the freezing cold and snow hawking customers. I told her later. Finally later arrived and I kept my word. Then things got strange. I wanted a side order of something coupled with french fries (it was on the menu that way). The waitress told me I’d have to buy the whole course meal in order to get that. GADS!!! Anyway, 2 beers later I was out and afoot again.

There’s something special here….

Right off the old town district where I was lodging was what looked to be a really big and fancy mall. I made plans to visit this mega-mall. No doubt this sucker was big, but it was very limited on anchor stores most of which were on street level with street access and the remainder was like a flea market!! Some of the stores made a ‘big’ effort to look ‘chic’ and ‘cool’ and they accomplished that. Others not so much and some really didn’t care. And just like in Naples, Italy there were street vendors hawking their goods.

Across from here at the edge of the old town district was this unusual place that has never escaped my mind “Ethiopian Goat Lady Inside”! For real!!! Look!!!!

I didn’t notice the Chuck Norris sign til just now!! Ha!!!

I liked the way this building was reflecting the cathedral angled across the street….I decided to do it in black and white. Cool, at least I think it is.

Some streets get a bit lively in the early evening……

Some don’t….

But, it’s always Beer O’Clock!!!

I have a goal. That goal is to return to Bucharest during a more friendly climate time….perhaps a summer, 2020 wouldn’t be too soon. Now, this isn’t to say I didn’t enjoy myself or the climate. I loved being here in the winter. But, I’m sure there’s more to see and do that warmer weather affords.

For now, I’ll plan on making this happen. Along with my other European favorites!

Peace, love, and beaches,

John
