Barry, Tropical Storm or Hurricane

It was expected that we would experience a Hurricane in south Louisiana this past weekend.

Just as Tropical Storm Barry neared the coast of Louisiana it became that expected hurricane and then just as quickly reverted back to a tropical storm.

It seemed as though the weather service reporters really didn’t know where Barry was or what Barry was doing. But, Barry was doing.

This was probably the oddest hurricane that I’ve ever experienced or seen develop. Usually the hurricanes enter the Gulf of Mexico through the Caribbean from the Atlantic Ocean birthing off the coast of Africa or thereabouts. But, Barry was in the State of Georgia!!!! He ventured south into the Gulf of Mexico where he became a tropical depression, then a tropical storm for a number of days made a hook of a northwestern turn and aimed at the Louisiana coast.

New Orleans seemed to have received the brunt of the problem in the form of flooding due to the rain from such a slow moving hurricane, 6 miles per hour. I walk faster than that!!

Nevertheless, Barry wander on shore from somewhere in South Louisiana and proceeded to march northward and a blazing pace of 5 miles per hour….once again, I walk faster than that.

I’m in Brusly, Louisiana for a few months and he wobbled a little west of here. Mostly it was a ‘light’ rain and a few gust of wind.

But, he did leave his mark here.

Here are a few of the photos from around my daughter’s house.

Walmart received it’s fair share of damage too. It was internal…..bare shelves from people panicking! The following pictures were from the 2 days before Barry’s arrival.

Barry, hurricane or tropical storm.

No bread, no chips and I don’t have a picture of the water aisle but, the shelves and pallets there were completely ’empty’.

Barry was my first hurricane experience in Louisiana in about 30 years. And living near Baton Rouge, Louisiana isn’t so bad, as by the time the hurricane has made it inland it is usually downgraded a category or two. The only exception to that would be a rapidly moving hurricane. Barry was practically crawling!

Today, roughly a day after, all that remains of Barry where I’m at is a bit of cloudiness and an occasional drizzle.

20 years in Florida and 2 years on the Caribbean coast of Mexico I experienced zero hurricanes and since Barry was only a tropical storm, I’ve seemed to have extended that streak.

NEXT!!! Back to my regular scheduled blogging!

Peace, love, and beaches,

John
