Cavtat, Croatia Cemetery

You read that correctly…..Cavtat, Croatia Cemetery. I’ve this thing for visiting ‘cemeteries’. Not some morbid reason, but just out of curiousity.

Here is an example of a cemetery in Mexico.

I’ve found that there is something a bit unique about the cemeteries that I’ve visited. While most will appear to be simple and plain at first glance….there does seem to be just something that sets them apart.

In Costa Rica, I noticed that they were 2 distinct types of cemetery….the one’s on the mountain sides outside the villages and the one’s that were part of the cities. Naturally the one’s on the mountain sides were well, on the mountain side and not on a plain flat land….these were very difficult to photograph due to no place to stop and set up. Then there were the one’s I found in the cities…..all were walled in with some of those walls at least 10 feet tall while others just over my reach. And, and some had guards at the entrances!!! ???? To keep folks out or in???

So what was different about the Cavtat cemetery in Croatia???

It’s a very steep walk to get to it. I believe it’s the highest point in the town. It’s sort of like it sits on a bluff overlooking the resort of Cavtat and the surrounding areas! Absolutely ‘magnificient’ view!!!

Even though the footing is okay, less than 100 yards squared….I did know that I was up there!! Remember, I’m not height friendly.

The walk to get there is from 2 opposite directions and both are very steep. Steep enough to take a break before reaching the destination.

I made it up once….but I didn’t bother making a second attempt. Although during our light snowfall would have provided some great photo opportunities.

Cavtat Cemetery

Here is the most unique thing that I found in the Cavtat Cemetery…..there were multiple bodies buried in most all the graves!!! And I’m not referring to side by side grave sites! I can understand though, the real estate was very limited!

I’ve never seen that….it’s like each grave site was it’s own mini-mausoleum!!!

Here’s a few more shots to leave you with….if you’ve stayed with me this long! Hehehehehe!

Meet you back here tomorrow for a visit to Olde Town Dubrovnik!!

Peace, love, and beaches,

John
