Life In A Deserted Resort Village

Have you ever thought….what is life like in a deserted resort? Me neither. Not once has it ever crossed my mind thru life. A deserted ghost town from the wild west, yes. But a Resort, never. And in reality it was only deserted for the off-season. But, still…..deserted.

My visit at this time of year (winter) was both intentional and confusingly unintentional. Intentional in that it was anticipated that I’d visit but hadn’t set any time yet as I was originally planned to tour anywhere from 2 to 4 years before heading back to the states. It didn’t turn out that way. Due to my misreading of the Schengen rules I found myself having to leave those Schengen countries and finding my way to a non-Schengen coutry for the next 90 days.

If I hadn’t mentioned why I cut my European/World travels short it’s because I spent 12 months of money in 5 months!!! GADS!!! That’s not good!

So, I’m just in Croatia at a time that just wasn’t planned. But, that can be a good thing! You see, I desperately needed some quality downtime and this stop for 3 weeks was just perfect. I’d have a chance to read, write, photograph and stop the bleeding of my finances.

A Nice Deserted Resort

I thoroughly enjoy my daily walks here. Most of the folks that live here speak English with the exception of my neighbor who became quite alarmed when I greeted her one morning!! She motioned toward me to stop and stay and she ran off, it was rather quickly to retrieve a fellow Croatian that spoke English. The neighbor was also alarmed thinking that something was wrong, I told her ‘no’ I was just telling my neighbor ‘Good Morning’! She explained to the elderly neighbor and announced she must now return to her cooking and bid me a ‘good day’.

Well! That was rather interesting!!

Cavtat is the name of this resort village. And I thought all along that I was in Dubrovnik which turns out is 11 miles away. I’m okay. I’ve bread, cheeses, wine, all the necessities for survival. A little lacking on heat takes a bit of getting used to. I’m a warm weather person and the ‘cold’ is taking me some getting used to….it’s December on the mountainous coast of Croatia!!!

Speaking of mountains….the apartment that I’m living in is built on the side of a very, very steep mountain. Walking up is good for me I keep telling myself.

Now, I’ve no winter clothes or shoes. No room for packing any and in this Deserted Resort Village, I’m not gonna have an opportunity to buy any either.

Not having the crowds to contend with helped me access some neat places to photo without the intrusion of tourist. So, I got some really clean shots. That, just that made this trip worthwhile.

After a short time the locals at the only market that was open became familiar with me and helped quite a bit. The Croatian currency is the Kuna. Rather easy to use…of course the more I travel the easier it is on mentally converting to U.S. Dollar to know how much I’m spending and the clerks were more than happy to teach me. I think I broke up their boredom of the off-season.

Cavtat; No Room at the Inn

I spent so much time walking and photographing that I didn’t get around to most of my blogging that’s one of the reasons why, a BIG reason why that I’m so far behind and sharing my experiences!

One of the three open coffee shops is located on the left in the top left photo. The bottom right photo is a vacant resort about a stones throw away from my apartment. Not even ‘staff’ is there!!! These pictures depict what life is like during the off-season in Cavtat, Croatia. And, honestly, I ‘loved’ it!

Here’s a couple more pics for the day! Hope you enjoy!

Below is another resort that’s beach front a short distance from my apartment. It too is totally vacant!

All the streets, alleys, businesses, resort hotels are hustling and bustling during the summer months!! Huge yatchs dock side by side in the marina and the shops and restuarants come alive. I did visit the restaurant below….bread, cheese and olives were available but the advertised pizza is only available in season. So, it was bread, cheese, olives and Heineken beer!!

Cheers!

Peace, love, and beaches,

John
