Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik, Croatia!

Gosh! I’ve got no earthly reason as to why to visit except I was told that Game of Thrones was filmed there…I’ve never seen the show! Never!! Even after being there I don’t seem to have a curiosity about the show (from here on out known as GoT). I’m sure it’s a good show and all, but I’m just not gonna add anything else to my life and take up time from the things I know I want to do.

Arriving in Croatia late in the evening when dark has beaten me there was a little uncomfortable. I had a hired driver taking me down winding country roads and I was wondering if anybody would ever find my body!!! Actually, he was quite a friendly and helpful guy! Toted my luggage uphill when I arrived at the airbnb….I was happy.

You never know where you’re landing with these suburban airports. The airport serving Dubrovnik is like in the middle of ‘nowhere’. And it’s size…..gosh, I’ve been in larger churches!!!

Settling in for a 3 week stay that evening didn’t really allow me to know what was in store. The owner of the airbnb insisted on sitting, chatting and sharing his wife’s homemade ‘brandy’. Delightful. But after he left it was time to quickly trek down to the Village for a few supplies.

Dark, windy and cold….but, from what I could see it was rather charming.

My morning view….

My first morning was somewhat of a surprise!! Bitterly cold with a strong wind and an awesomely BEAUTIFUL place to find myself hanging out.

I felt like a little kid at Christmas time reading a Christmas story!!! You know, those pictures (actually drawings) of the hamlets with children playing with their toys. No parents around to bother them! I was now ‘there’.

I took in a valuable history lesson that I will share with you in the next blog or so, hang in there.

So, today I get to visit the village. I find a proper store with reasonable price grocery and veggies, a few coffee shops, one bar, and no restaurants!!! They were all ‘closed’! It’s their off-season. That explained to me why it was…..deserted!

And I wasn’t exactly in Dubrovnik, I was 11 miles (18 kilometers) away in a resort village, an abandoned resort village!!! Only the local folks that lived there were around and most of those had scattered away for a holiday.

Things would happen about the village, but I hardly ever saw anyone doing whatever had been done. For instance. It was just about a week and a half before Christmas and all of a sudden decorations were up and lite, but I never saw anyone doing the work!

Strange….

It seemed that the largest population was that of ‘cats’! They were everywhere!!

The cats, when I’d go out on my walks would follow along with me. So, basically I was never alone!! I’m not sure they could come to my aid unless purring someone to death were possible.

It turns out that during the spring and summer this is a booming place!!! It’s decked out with people and yatchs!!! Evidently the port side is rather deep.

The above is the marina area….

Dubrovnik is 11 miles away!

So, I’m here for a total of 3 weeks. Down in the village. I say ‘down in the village’ because the apartment I’m staying in is on the side of a mountain! A BIG arse mountain!! There’s a bus stop and a taxi service…I find out the schedule and make me a trip. I’m sure the city bus will be much cheaper. Outside my apartment is a neat patio but it’s just too cold to sit out and there’s fresh produce trees all around! This is cool!

I’ve got at least one day scheduled to visit Dubrovnik, the Olde Town section. I’ve got to keep reminding myself that this is for ‘down time’.

Tomorrow, a bit of a walk around and a few unique things that I ran across.

And….it did snow….

More tomorrow. From a really cool walk!

Peace, love, and beaches,

John
