Happy Independence Day! The 4th of July?

Today we as American’s Celebrate Independence Day. The 4th of July. But, why did I put a question mark in the blog title?

I was reading about our Independence Day this morning. That’s not an odd thing for me to do, as while I don’t do it every year, I do read of our Independence Day quite often and it doesn’t have to be around the time we celebrate. You see, I like being reminded who we are; American’s. Why, how, when, and where are all of interest to me. I like to secure my interest and feeling in that Independence.

Here’s a little bit that I read this morning. And no….I didn’t get it from some news blog or website. This comes from the National Constitution Center.

Officially, the Congress declared its freedom from Great Britain on July 2, 1776, when it approved a resolution and delegates from New York were permitted to make it a unanimous vote. (This is from http://www.constitutioncenter.org)

There are some great reads of what took place that day. The bravery it took for these men to take this upon themselves is lost thru history, thus somewhat underappreciated.

Next up!!! The signing of The Declaration of Independence…..August 2, 1776 which took place during the term of the Second Continental Congress. Which had several different members by this time. I found that a bit interesting. In less than a month at that time of the year several seats of Congress were turned over. Different than today.

So, that brings me to the point of the question mark in the title. “The 4th of July?”

The 4th of July is the date that Congress approved the actual Declaration of Independence document. It was sent to a printer named John Dunlap, where 200 copies were made of which 26 copies remain today.

Independence Day

Signed in Philadelphia with John Hancock’s famous signature was in the middle, because of his status as President of the Congress.

We as American’s like to celebrate. Make that ‘love’ to celebrate. I think there’s multiple holidays (some quite silly) each month that gives us cause to cook, drink and be merry. And, there’s nothing wrong with that.

But, perhaps taking a sober, a somber moment to call into recollection as to why we celebrate and the elements of the foundation of that declaration of independence would bustress our faith and love for the freedom we so often take for granted.

Happy 4th of July!!!

Peace, love, and beaches,

John
