Pierre Part, Louisiana…

Pierre Part, Louisiana…

Pierre Part.  I always thought that was a weird name for a town.  I’ve known of this place for all of my knowing life.  My dad was born and raise there.  That’s my known connection.  There may be others but, I just haven’t gotten around to seeking that connection out.

My intention is to spend some time here.

Here’s a little info on this lovely place…..and it is lovely.  Picturesque.

It’s made up of mostly French ancestry.  Directly from France and there is some from Canada (Acadians) from France. Until the early- to mid-twentieth century the people almost exclusively spoke Cajun French at home. This caused the people of Pierre Part and the rest of the Cajun community to be labeled as “backwards” or “ignorant” by outsiders, and in many cases from the 1910s to the 1970s, students who spoke Cajun French in school ran the risk of being punished.  My mom spoke Cajun French but refused to let me.  There was a reason for this.  My mom was a gossiper and she could speak Cajun French in front of my clueless little ass and not run the risk that I might repeat this oh so secret information. I guess that was my fault too as I revealed things I heard (unknowing to my mom).

I did end up learning a few ‘curse slangs’.

This local plies his talents to driftwood.  Cool!

I understand that the History Channel had a reality show called, “Swamp People” featuring a family that lived in Pierre Part.  While I never saw it….I experienced these people in real life.

Pierre Part

It’s rather difficult to explain how to get there…..it’s a very scenic route anyway you go.  No interstate leads there!  I take La. 1 south from Baton Rouge, turning right in White Castle onto La. 69 to Grand Bayou taking a right on La. 70 and grab your camera for some othe most picturesque and driver friendly sights of bayous and swampland around.

This is a fishing and hunting mecca!!

Some of the friendliest folks on the face of the earth.  You can just be driving by, roll down your window and ask for some of the most unique directions accompanied by an even more unique accent and you’ll probably get handed a beer!

This is a very laid back lifestyle and as laid back as the Mexican’s are, I really can’t compare them.  Can’t put my finger on the difference in the laid back lifestyle.  But, both seem quite enjoyable.

This area has attracted me to the point that I may find a place to park myself between my adventures abroad.

There’s another place a short drive before reaching Pierre Part called Bayou Corne and I’ll get back to that on another day.  Sad how irresponsible modernization can actually ruin a place….you’ll see what I mean.

Anyway, today I’m in Pierre Part and here’s another place from my past that I enjoyed frequenting, The Rainbow Inn   It’s like it’s at the triangle of 2 bayous where a pontoon bridge crosses.

Here’s tha pontoon bridge   The edge is facing in the left hand side of the picture and it will rotate to the right to close the gap and allow traffic to flow.

And here’s the specific reason this bridge opened…..  A bunch of fun loving Cajun’s out on a Sunday afternoon good time.

I figured while I’m around here off and on thru much of September, I can take the time show you some of South Louisiana and enjoy it myself.

Tomorrow, I’ll show you Bayou Corne.
