Freedom of Press

We all love Media, news and the Press. We consider the freedom of press to be an essential part of any country because we believe that it is a medium by which we get to know the truth about the world and also, we get to peek inside the lives of celebrities. But have we ever actually wondered if in today’s time, the freedom of press has gone too far?

As much as I think that the press having their own freedom is important so as to the Government not being able to omit anything that is to not their liking, I also thing that the press is going a little too far with this liberty.

We Read News everyday; but how many times have we bothered to check the sources and think if it’s actually legit? In the case of celebrities, it mostly isn’t true. Magazines write about the lives of celebrities all the time, talking about their homes, their careers, their affairs and sometimes, not in a positive way. Now, I know it comes with the territory and people enjoy the publicity but sometimes, they don’t. The media often rips their lives apart to find a scrap of juicy news to Publish and that, I think, not something that should be happening.

Some people might argue that being a celebrity means having all the media attention on them and for it to be alright for the media to publish what they please. If I were to agree with that point, which I don’t, but let’s hypothetically say that I do, there’s still the matter of victims of a crime whose lives are being invaded by the media for a little bit of information. These victims try to live their lives trying to forget what happened or they try to put it behind them but the media often does not let them which I think is unethical and downright wrong.

Another place where the media goes too far is politics. I personally think that the press is manipulative. They publish news to let us know about the latest political issues, yes. But the real question here is, do they actually tell us the whole story or just enough to sway our minds in a particular direction? The direction that they want. When we read news about politics, at the end of the article, do we not start to formulate opinions? opinions that often seem to match every other person who has read the same article? What does that tell you? It basically means that the article was written in such a way as to provoke certain thoughts and certain opinions that they want you to have towards a political body.

In conclusion, I am definitely not saying that the media’s freedom should be stripped away and that they should not be able to publish what they feel is right. But all I’m saying is that there should be certain boundaries so as to not publish something that is morally wrong.
