Synopsis

When King Jameson declares his love for Lady Hollis Brite, Hollis is shocked—and thrilled. After all, she’s grown up at Keresken Castle, vying for the king’s attention alongside other daughters of the nobility. Capturing his heart is a dream come true.

But Hollis soon realizes that falling in love with a king and being crowned queen may not be the happily ever after she thought it would be. And when she meets a commoner with the mysterious power to see right into her heart, she finds that the future she really wants is one that she never thought to imagine.

My Review

The Betrothed by Kiera Cass was a casual read for me. Based on the praise I had heard about Kiera Cass, especially her Selection series, I was expecting more than this book was able to deliver.

I’m not saying that I didn’t enjoy it; It definitely had its moments. It made me smile and chuckle on multiple occasions, mostly in the first half of the book. But, aside from that, the book felt flat, with all emotions a little muted. I giggled and I wanted to punch some people but I hardly felt much else. I wasn’t shocked, excited or upset when I supposed to be, when the author meant for me to be.

The plot line itself was pretty bland and basic. It was like every conventional YA fantasy novel. The ending, the “twist”, was painfully obvious and could be – was – predicted from miles away, save for one detail.

I think the the best feature of this book, aside from Hollis’s chemistry with Silas, was the character development that we got to see for her as the book progressed.

“I know exactly who I am. And I’m content with it. I touched her cheek. “You’re my mother. I wish you could be content with me, too.”

– Kiera Cass, The Bethrothed

Hollis went from being a naive, feeble minded pushover to being a woman who was finally content with her own self, but never losing her touch of extreme kindness.

The other thing I enjoyed about this book was Kiera Cass’s writing style. It was light. What I mean by that is that it flowed to flawlessly and smoothly that it made a mediocre book incredibly easy to read.

In summary, while the book was entertaining, it was not in any way a masterpiece. It’s only good for a one time read and I know I won’t be rereading it any time soon, if ever. It also did not do the job of getting me excited for the next book in the series. While I know that I will end up reading it, purely to confirm the theories that I have formed in my head, I am not going to be counting down the days till its release.
