Excerpt
In the next moment, Mr. Carpenter had a gun in his hands. He aimed it at us. Those milling about gasped. Girls screeched. People receded a safe distance but didn’t leave.
“Step away, Marly,” Mr. Carpenter growled. “Kiss tomorrow goodbye, buddy.”
Unhooking my arm from Duffy’s, I splayed my hands in front of me. “Mr. Carpenter. What are you doing?” My voice quavered.
His mouth kinked into a vengeful smirk. “Rae always said you were too sweet to see what lay before your eyes. This prick killed my baby. And now I’m going to kill him.” A tremor went through his fingers as he gripped the gun with both hands.
“Mr. Carpenter, you got it wrong,” Duffy said. Instead of retreating, he advanced. “I’d never hurt her. We were friends. I didn’t kill Rae.”
“Paul, don’t do this. Paul.” Megan tugged on his arm, and he elbowed her away. His scathing glare was glued to Duffy, with intent to kill.
Time stood still. Somewhere in the recesses of my mind, I heard sirens. Staring slack-jawed at Rae’s psychotic father wielding a gun, I waited for the inevitable.
Swift and unyielding, Duffy shoved me away from him. My leg gave under pressure, and I fell to my knees. The sound of firing bullets ripped split through the air, intermingling with a cacophony of screams and cries. Time slowed as Duffy’s body jolted, jerked, and collapsed.
An icy tumble of panic had me crawling over the pavement toward him. Spread eagle, not moving, I couldn’t tell if he was alive or dead. Vivid red bled into the fibers of his shirt.
