Travel Diary: Halloween in Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen

Following my incredible American Halloween road trip last year, I couldn't see this October go by without another spooky adventure.  And so, we headed to Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen to get our fill of Halloween magic.

I wasn't aware of it previously but Copenhagen really knows how to embrace the autumn months. Everywhere we went, the city was full of pumpkins and decorations. But the most magical place to experience the season of the witch has to be Tivoli Gardens, a stunning theme park located in the city's heart.

Founded in 1843, Tivoli (also know as Tivoli Gardens) is one of the most visited theme parks in the world and was even the inspiration behind Disneyland. Despite being centred in the bustling city of Copenhagen, it creates an immersive, relaxing atmosphere.

The park has 4 roller coasters, including its famous wooden roller coaster (Rutschebanen) which first opened in 1914. It also has dozens of other amazing rides suitable for both the thrill seekers, the not-so-brave and small children. I really liked that whether you want par-take in unlimited rides or would prefer to just take in all the sights, there really is something for everyone. As well as the gardens, rides and shops, Tivoli is also unique for its many restaurants - some of which have been awarded Michelin stars.

In the Summer months, Tivoli is blanketed in flowers and, naturally towards the end of the year, it becomes a Scandinavian winter wonderland. Of course, there was only one thing I was interested in - Tivoli at Halloween. And Tivoli really knows how to pull out all the stops for the most wonderful time of the year.

From mid October to the first week of November each year, Tivoli is completed made over with the most incredibly detailed Halloween theming. With over 20,000 pumpkins, hay bales, countless scarecrows and spooky delights in every corner, it really was a sight to behold. And, whilst the park looked just gorgeous during the day, it truly comes alive at night with pumpkin lanterns and bubbling witches cauldrons illuminating the park. Just for Halloween also, they've created a whole host of seasonal treats such as black pumpkin hot dogs, creepy cakes and much more.

Thankfully, the park was fairly quiet so we didn't queue for any rides or anything at all for that matter. We spent near enough two days in the park and I could have happily stayed longer though that was more than plenty of time for us to explore and try everything at least a few times. Tivoli is probably more than do-able in one day but I loved that we got to take our time and just soak it all in. It really makes for the perfect excuse to spend a weekend in Copenhagen, especially at this time of the year.

You can see what I mean about the park coming to life at night and if you can only pop in for a few hours, I'd definitely recommend going in the evening. The park is open until 11pm most evenings so there's no danger of missing out on anything before closing time.

Well, that's it for my snap shots from Tivoli. I had literally hundreds of photos from the trip so this was pretty hard to narrow down. But tell me, what are you doing for Halloween? Have you planned any spooky days out? Would you like to visit Tivoli Gardens at Halloween? As always, I love reading your comments so please do share your thoughts with me below.

Until next time ghouls and gals,
