The first half of our holiday was pretty relaxed which meant by the second week I was eager for adventure. If you're a bit of a history buff like myself, then Mallorca is absolutely full of interesting historical spots to visit. Having climbed the 365 steps and explored the Old Towns (check out Part I), we also got to see some Roman ruins just outside of Alcudia; as well as its many defence towers from Medieval days. In this case, I decided to venture a little further east of the island in to Porto Cristo and the Caves of Drach.

Porto Cristo is a small town on the eastern coast of Mallorca where the views are nothing short of stunning. Having rocked up on a coach with a guided tour, we were left to explore the little shops and restaurants before heading to the caves - one of Mallorca's most famous attractions. Here's a little look...

The Caves of Drach are essentially four underground caves which are believed to have been discovered during the 14th century. Once inside, they're pretty darn impressive and I could have easily spent hours in there. A beautiful lake runs all the way through the caves - the largest underground lake in the world. Having walked the 1200 meters of cave, we were taken down to a large area in front of water where a small orchestra played some classical music in darkness. At the end of the tour, guests are offered a short boat ride through it. A nice touch, I thought. 

The day trip itself felt very long, with some of the stops being a little tedious, but overall I would definitely recommend one of these excursions in order to see more of the island. Surprisingly, there was so much to see in every part of Mallorca and so days like this really helped to cram in as much as possible. What made it even better, however, was our tour guide Juan who was just plan nuts. I miss him already.

Naturally, we finished up our trip in the same way we started - with a shit load of food. Now, I know I said I was a city break kind-a-gal only but I have to say, besides the views and the caves, the food was probably the biggest highlight for me. Living on fresh fish and seafood for two weeks solid is pretty much living the dream.
