Natural Living: Juicing Blends: What Works And What Sucks



Hey Guys,

As you all know, I kinda fell off the healthy wagon for the last 6 MONTHS of 2015 (I know…..it’s bad).  BUT I’ve definitely gotten back on it this month (YAY!) .  And one of the ways that I’ve been doing that is by JUICING.  Now for those who aren’t familiar with juicing, it’s is an awesome way to get a huge amount of nutrients absorbed into your system really quickly, while at the same time giving your digestive system a break from all the fiber in fruits and vegetables.   And the best part is all you need is a juicer and your personal selection of your favorite fruits and vegetables.  And for those who don’t have a juicer
(or who have a juicer lost somewhere in storage) you can use your trusty blender.  Now this is definitely more time consuming because you have to sieve your blended drink to get the juice but if I’m honest I hardly ever have the energy to do that, so if you are like me and don’t mind some fiber, don’t bother.  

Anyway I’ve been trying quite a few blends of fruits and vegetables and thought I’d share with you those fruits and vegetables that really worked and those that I wouldn’t mind never tasting again.  Here we go.

WHAT WORKS
Creamy Bananas - Now I don’t think you can technically juice a banana but if you are looking for a milk or cream alternative for your blends, bananas will be your new best friends.  I personally use bananas for every fruit blend I make.  Not only do they give it a creamy taste and texture, but they also make my blends a lot more filling.  Double win!

Juicy Pineapple -I think we can all agree that pineapples are arguably the most tedious fruits to deal with.  They are big, awkwardly shaped, and have difficult and annoying skins.  There have been plenty of times pineapples have gone bad in my house because no one want to go through the hassle of cutting one up.  But trust me guys, pineapples are AWESOME for juicing.  Do they give you a nice refreshing taste, but they also give you soooo much juice, you hardly need to add any water to get a nice juicy consistency.

Curt Apples – Apples are another staple for my juices and blends.  And the best thing about them is they work equally as well with fruits as they do with vegetables.  I find that green apples work better than red for vegetables though.  I love them because they give a refreshing curt taste to the juice/blend without overpowering any of the other fruits or vegetables.  I have yet to try a blend that apples don’t work with

Sneaky Spinach (or Kale) – Spinach and Kale are by far my favorite vegetables to blend.  Why you may ask?  Because….. I can hardly taste them!!!  I blend them raw and you should too if you want all the health benefits.  The only downside is they add a weird texture to your blend (not a problem if you are using a juicer) which makes it significantly harder to sieve out the juice part.  But if texture isn’t a problem for you, them leafy greens are for you.  Extra Benefit:  They arguably have the most health benefits out of all the fruits and vegetables. 

Spicy Ginger – I LOOOVE ginger.  I will put ginger in almost any drink I make, and juices/blends are no exception.  Much like apples, ginger works equally well with fruits and vegetables, and I’ve found it works especially well with carrots.  I would suggest you use fresh sliced ginger instead of the powder because I personally find that there is a significant difference in taste. 


WHAT SUCKS
Watery Cucumber – Now for honesty’s sake, I’ll admit that I’ve never been a big fan of cucumbers but I swear that’s not the reason I hate them in juices/blends.  I’ve given cucumbers three chances to change my mind and they have failed each time.  I just haven’t found any fruits and vegetables that are complemented by these things.  I just find them watery and weird tasting.  I think I’ll just leave cucumbers for my salads.

Curious Carrots – Ok sucks might be a harsh word for carrots.  They really aren’t that bad.  The reason they’re on this list is I feel its only fair to warn you that carrots are most definitely an acquired taste.  They are growing on me but very slowly.  They also don’t go well with a lot of fruits and vegetables like bananas or kale, in my experience.  I’d suggest you try it with apples, ginger and lemon.  That’s the best blend I’ve found so far.  PLEASE give me a better one if you know of any. 

Putrid Papaya – This one was a mistake.  I repeat A MISTAKE.  I will NEVER suggest adding papaya to a drink ever again.  And this is coming from someone who loves eating papaya.  I tried this with banana and I will never try this with anything ever again.  When blended, papaya has a really weird (gross) texture and taste.  I hate to be disgusting but it kinda just reminds me of saliva.  Just trust me on this one.  Don’t try it.  And if you do, you’ve been warned.
