On Saturday, along with James and the kids, I went to the launch of Cumbernauld FM radio station at our local town centre. Along with performers, there was a market with different stalls. After a few minutes of walking around, one stall caught my attention and I wanted to find out more.
Carbon Clyde. My son Liam has an obsession with football and the Carbon Clyde had plenty of football tops and as he was looking to see if there was one that could fit him, I took a leaflet so I could find out more about this particular initiative, kit and football boot recycling.
The idea behind this project is to reuse the items that have been donated, saving them from going to the landfills, keeping the area clean and tidy. They will be taking their mobile recycle unit around the community. They will also be open on match days to accept any donations from the public.
This is not the only project, they have a few upcoming projects which also aim to Reduce Carbon Emissions and improve the environment.
- Travel aims – introduce not only a car sharing scheme in the area but also hold workshops to engage with the community to travel more by bicycle and how to look after their bikes/how they can last longer.
- Home Energy Advisor to be trained and recruit volunteers who would help the community if they experiencing fuel poverty or requiring energy advice.
- Delivery of an Eco-Friendly football programme to over 1800 school children within Cumbernauld. The target would be initially to p4-p6 children.
- Incorporating all the above, on matchdays the community would be invited to join the Carbon Clyde project before matches at open days where they would be encouraged to sign up for all the initiatives that are in place.
I think this is a fantastic initiative and I look forward to seeing how the other projects progress. More organisations should take note and try similar initiatives in their area. We need to look after our towns and cities, after all our children need somewhere safe, clean and healthy to live.
