Stay Onside

It has been proven that exercise helps to not only improve our fitness levels but our mental health too. Activities such as walking or swimming are amongst the most popular choice of exercise but at Clyde FC they are bringing football to the forefront.

Stay Onside, is a men's football team, now the brilliant thing about this team is, it is made up of users of NHS Lanarkshire Psychological services. This is a first in the Cumbernauld area and when I heard about the project I wanted to find out more and see how I could get involved. At the moment they have between 9 and 12 regular players and train once a week at Broadwood.

The main aims of the team:

  • Create friendships and improve social wellbeing
  • Create a sense of belonging
  • Improve mental health
  • Improve fitness and general wellbeing
  • To have fun.

The team will take part in games across the country and have a game against Stenhousemuir at the end of this month. (date to be confirmed)

I attended their first team meeting last month and on Wednesday I went along to one of their Training Sessions. Wearing their very own team kit, they guys got on great and you could see that they were really enjoying, not only playing the game, but being in the company of others.

After the session I spoke with Clyde's head of community development and not only is he running these training sessions, he is looking into other projects that will benefit the people of Cumbernauld, giving more back to the community.

When I have information about any new projects I will update you all.
