Hey, booklovers and friends – a change in coordinates

For the last two decades, this blog has been my home. So many changes – personal and professional, and this remains the common thread. I did a few things recently which also made up for the radio silence on this blog. Certainly though, no matter how many times I consider it, I can’t give up journaling thoughts. Some things make us who we are, and for me this blog will always represent that space.

New city

We moved to Austin and I am rediscovering what it feels like being new in the city especially with a child in tow. I have had no time to think about how I feel because our first priority has been to consider how our toddler experiences the transition. The change in friends, schools, and spaces can be daunting to a little person still understanding what friends mean. I’d like for Adi to have a sense of a hometown but even as I type this, I feel, we may move enough to not necessarily give him that with clarity. It makes me wonder if he’ll find that empowering or question why we didn’t just stick to one city forever. I do not ascribe to the notion that kids do not remember anything till they are 8 – or whatever age one picks. I have flash memories from a much younger age, so I expect all experiences add up in our memory bank, even if they are cluttered.

New work

My hometown, memories, professional and personal ambitions feel like they have collided a little. I am not sure when it will work in a way that feels sustainable, but for now, I have begun work at Peerbagh. It’s a lofty mission, but one that my motherhood, and personhood all feel connected with. Why now? I had a moment of reckoning last fall. In a meeting with a room full of white people – as is mostly the case if you are a marketer in corporate America, one person said – non-native English speakers can’t do creative. I had a whole mental event about this, and it took me a while to process. It is time. I have the energy and intention to build a more inclusive world for our children and communities.
