Fix a slow computer.

If you are like most people and are rather attached to your Computer, you know how your personal and professional productivity can lag if there is a problem. There are a few ways to tackle the problem, however.

  • Always start with the old standby of powering down, letting your computer sit idle for a few minutes, and then powering back on again. Watch the screen for any messages or warnings, particularly a message from your antivirus software program.
  • If there is a virus notification, deal with it immediately. Even if you do not receive a warning, running the software to conduct a more thorough antivirus inspection may find something the routinely scheduled inspection missed that could be causing a slowdown.
  • If that does not work, check your wifi connection. Any slowness there may be attributed to your router. (With supply chain slowdowns, it is best to order a router right away if you think you will need one soon.)
  • If you own a Mac product and have noticed some slowdowns after the most recent operating system update, take steps to mitigate some bugs in the system. Luckily, these are more of an annoyance than a major concern.
  • Another step that is a good idea regardless of the health of your computer is to offload files. You can choose to upload them to a cloud backup system of your choice or an external hard drive. For important files and photos, experts recommend doubling your backup efforts, just in case. Additionally, if you opt for an external hard drive for storage, ensure you keep it in a safe, dry, and fireproof location such as a home safe or safety deposit box.

Take a moment to refresh.

Contrary to the previous bits of advice and information, sometimes you have to slow down to catch up. Remind yourself that it is ok to take a break in the middle of a big project or hectic workday. If you are not thinking clearly, you may make more mistakes than necessary. Your mental health is as important as the next big deadline.

  • Whenever you are feeling stressed out, remove yourself from the situation both physically and mentally. Go outside and take a walk in the fresh air. If the weather is not ideal, climb the stairwell or walk laps around the office.
  • Listen to the sounds around you or your favorite podcast. Meditative music can work wonders to calm and put you at ease.

  • Sometimes a drink of refreshing, cool water is enough to give you a reset so that you can get back and do your best work.
  • Finally, take a physical check-in to see if your lack of productivity is due to an unnoticed health
