How To Land a Job in the UK (if you’re not a Nurse)

Are you a dependent of a Tier-2 General visa holder in the UK? Are you new to the country and looking for a job?

If you are, stick around as I share tips for you to land a job in the UK, particularly for professionals outside the healthcare industry.

Firstly, welcome to the United Kingdom. I’m pretty sure you’re still adjusting to the weather, the culture, the accent and the new life. Secondly, congratulations… I know the Visa process isn’t easy.

Getting all the requirements and submitting the documents to the visa application centre is time-consuming and sometimes stressful. I believe it’s more tedious with Covid-19 lurking around.

Searching for a job was on top of my list after I landed. There was pressure. Just to be clear, my wife didn’t push me to get a job asap. It was my initiative to have one. I am aware of the cost of me being flown from the Philippines to the UK – it’s not easy peasy money. My wife had to save up and do bank shifts (overtime work).

My first-month hunting for a job wasn’t successful. I’ve literally sent my resume to over 200 vacancies but none of them came back. I didn’t get a single call for an interview… zero!

What I got were countless rejections. It’s heartbreaking. I started to question myself, my skills and my capabilities. I felt little, honestly.

I thought this couldn’t continue. I shouldn’t dwell on this outcome too much.

I should help my wife with the bills, the rent and the council tax. So I searched the internet and tweaked a couple of things.

Here are the changes I made to my little ‘strategy’ to land interviews and get my dream job:

  •  I downloaded a CV or resume in UK format. I took a lot of inspiration from all the CV samples I saw online and adapted them.
  • I’ve listed all my training and certifications. If you’ve got a globally recognised certificate, please make sure it’s on your CV.
  • Please highlight your accomplishments in each of your past roles. This part will surely have recruiters consider you.
  • One of the common questions when applying is if you have a permit to work in the UK, so I decided to include it in my email when applying. You will have the confidence from the recruiters that they will not have a problem hiring you. The BRP serves your legal pass to work here. *Please don’t send a scanned copy of your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) unless they ask for it.*
  • Search for industry-based job boards. The more specific, the better chances of you getting interviews. Depending on the industry you wanted to join, aside from interviews, sometimes recruiters will also ask you to create essays – so prepare and research ahead.

The things I’ve listed above were changes that dramatically got me interviews and calls.

You may feel sometimes that things are not going your way. Be patient. The UK is full of opportunities. There will be one for you – the one that you’ve always dreamt of.

I wish you the best in your job search!
