RAVPower 20100mAh External Battery Pack Review

Are you a tech junkie who’s surrounded by devices that constantly need to be charged? Yeah, me too! That’s why I was so excited when RAVPower asked me to review their 20,100mAh external Battery Pack. The product description said it could handle TWO devices at one time and automatically determines the correct current for devices. In layman’s terms, that means it won’t short out your battery by charging it incorrectly or for too long. I was super excited when I read that because I have a ton of devices that I need to charge regularly – Android smartphones, a Windows smartphone, my digital camera, a Kindle Fire, etc. Just thinking about being able to charge them all using the same device got me pretty excited!

When my shipment from RAVPower arrived, I excitedly opened the package and saw that they sent me both the External Battery Pack and their wall charger. It also has two ports with the same technology as the external battery pack so it won’t overcharge anything. I immediately started charging the power pack so I could test it out. I charged it for about 2 hours the first time and then started using it.

Once it was charged, I started testing the battery pack on every device I owned. I tried my cell phone – a ZTE Maven with Android on it. It charged flawlessly. I also tried charging Phillip’s phone (same model) at the same time and they charged great. I also tried my Kindle Fire – again, it charged up perfectly. I was very impressed with how fast the charging was even though my devices don’t have the newest “Quick Charge” technology that this battery is capable of charging. I was able to use the battery pack at least 5 times before I needed to charge it.

Overall, I am very pleased with the battery pack. It looks great – it has a sleek black design that doesn’t attract fingerprints. The logo isn’t too overpowering yet you can still see it well – it’s tasteful. The battery pack does what it says it will. It charges all sorts of devices quickly and properly. It even worked with my super finicky old cell phone (Motorola Photon Q). It used to only charge on one specific power brick otherwise it would constantly disconnect and reconnect. On the RAVPower Battery Pack, it charged just like it is supposed to!

I am also very happy with the extra features included. First, it has a button you can press to check the remaining battery level. It shows 1 to 4 blue lights when you click the button. One light means you should charge it soon, 2 lights is about half of the battery left, 3 is ~75% full and 4 is mostly full to completely full. Having the charge level at your fingertips is a great idea!

I also love that the device is essentially future-proof. Provided that the device keeps working (and build quality seem solid so it should), it will work with the new generation of phones that are coming out with USB-C “quick charge” charging ports. Unfortunately I don’t have a phone with this feature so I couldn’t test the USB-C charging port on the battery pack but the fact that it has one is pretty cool!

Charging ports on the RAVPower External Battery Pack and Wall Charger

A few cons about the battery pack are the weight and the included charging cables. The RAVPower battery pack is VERY heavy. It weighs almost a pound. It’s not what you want if you just want a backup to toss in your purse for everyday. This is a powerhouse that’s more suited for long trips or to keep you connected at home in case of a power outage. The included USB cables are just okay. They’re rather short and they feel cheap. However, you can use whatever USB cables you have lying around the house. It’s actually recommended to use the ones that came with your devices to get the best charging experience.

The wall charger is a great addition! It’s not included when you buy the battery pack but it’s a great buy at ~$15 (current price is $18 but it does go on sale often). It also has two charging ports. It also worked with every device I tried to charge on it. My only real complaint is that it would be nice if the outlet prongs were sideways because as it stands, the device takes up 3 slots on my surge protector. Not a huge deal and you can always just plug it in to a wall outlet and put it on the bottom so it’s not blocking anything.

Bottom line? Absolutely worth the price if you need a high-capacity external battery pack. This one is a beast. It’s well made, works well, and has some great features for its price.
