Natural Grey Hair is Here to Stay! (Tips)

Women in their 20s and 30s are no longer masking their natural Grey Hair with a box of hair dye. Nothing makes me happier than to see people challenge society’s unrealistic beauty standards. If you have a few silver streaks peeking through, don’t be afraid to embrace the transition, because you’re in good company.

Sarah Harris, Deputy Editor of British Vogue, began turning grey at just sixteen years old. She spent her teen years dyeing her hair, but ultimately learned to accept the shade in her 20s. It definitely helped that her mother was also naturally grey and people would regularly fawn over her steely strands in her presence.

“I like the rebelliousness of my hair; that it’s honest and non-conformist. Although the irony is, many people think I dye it,” Sarah says. “A debate between two girls took place on my Instagram account, one telling the other that I dye it, the other insisting that I didn’t. In the end, I told them who was right.”

How to care for your grey hair

Grey hair has no pigment and can even turn yellow due to external factors like the sun, minerals in your water, and hair products that contain silicones and sulfates. Using a clarifying shampoo every once in a while will help remove any free radicals that may be present in your strands. You might also want to up your deep conditioning routine because experts say people with grey hair are prone to dry, wiry strands. That’s because the lack of pigment in grey hair also affects its texture.

For Sarah, her grey hair is her statement accessory. She keeps her style relatively simple so it doesn’t compete with her ashen locks.

“I never wear colour or prints, but mainly white, grey, black, navy and khaki. My hair needs regular trims, but that’s the case with all long hair. Otherwise, it’s low maintenance. “
