M10 show week #88

Well, due to crybaby over there, we will be interrupted tonight so HE can eat with us!

Elvis:  An' I appreciate that- 'ceptin' the 'crybaby' part...

So this week we feature 1961, one new debut, and a new #1, so let's start out by getting that debut in!  This is country duo Dan + Shay at #10...

That'll be stuck in mah head all week...

It'll probably get lonely in there!  Anyway, I said we were going to 1961 this week- and while Canada matches us at #1 with Bobby Vee's Take Good Care Of My Baby, Australia had some homegrown talent at the top.  In fact, he was the very first native to hit their top 40 charts anywhere in the country!  He tried- twice- to make it in America.  The first time, idiot promoters labelled him "the boomerang boy" and made him do exhibitions where anyone who could throw farther than he did won a prize.  He paid off pretty good- until the day he got drunk first.  That changed their mind about the exhibitions.

The second time, however, was after a very serious accident that really impacted his mental health.  The trip went miserably, he flew to London and woke up three days later in a straightjacket, only getting released

when an expat in the hospital identified him.  Unfortunately, it would become an ongoing thing until his death for Johnny O'Keefe, who was at the top this week in 1961 in Australia with this tune...

Man, that there story sure is a shame.  What a talent!

I agree.  Now this is the first week of "before we were born", Jo-Anne, so my Song I Wouldn't Turn Off was a bit harder, but nothing like a challenge.  I found 8 that I picked out, slashed that to 3, and here are my picks for this week in 1961:

3rd place goes to a song that... well, it was the number one this week here and in Canada- Bobby Vee's Take Good Care Of My Baby- a song that reached #6 in Australia.

2nd goes to the song that was #9 this week here- a song that peaked #3 in Australia, but apparently got no higher than #11 in Canada- Ray Charles and Hit The Road, Jack.

And this week's song I wouldn't turn off-

...the Highwaymen and Michael, which was #3 here this week, and peaked at 2 in Canada and at the top in Australia (possibly, as in Canada, under Michael Row The Boat).
