So two things about today's show: First, I am typing this after taking Misty to Shoaff Park. Try being dragged for an hour and a half by a newly energized doggie that doesn't know the words "slow down". Needless to say, I'm a bit tired, so if I skimp a little on the comedic side, blame Misty (and thank God for it!) Second, there is a certain kind of Song on the Billboard charts known as "recurrant". To explain it, we go to the internet...
Descending titles are removed from the Hot 100 after 20 weeks on the chart if below No. 50 or after 52 weeks if below No. 25. To re-enter after having graduated to recurrent status, a song must garner enough chart points, with a notable reason for its resurgence.
Now, that's not exactly what we have going here, but my top fifteen (which I don't show off the whole list) has three songs that either return to the top 15, return from the lower 5 to the top ten, or make an unexpectedly big move back up the charts this week. What that means to you: one song will re-enter the top ten after an absence of a couple weeks, and one will shoot skyward yet again. Also, two songs make the top ten for the first time! This week our "double feature" takes us to 1963, where our Canadian friends had Bobby Vinton's Blue Velvet at the top (and he would repeat that on Cashbox next week, while our Australian friends were having a laugh at Allan Sherman's Hello Mudduh, Hello Fadduh! (A Letter From Camp), which was at our top two weeks past. There are a ton of songs I love on this week's chart in '63, so I raised the bar REALLY high- and came up with JUST the top three. And they would be....
...well, they would be too close to call for me! So I declare three winners, and in chart order they are...
At #19 on the way down from a top ten run, it's More (Theme from Mondo Cane) by Kai Winding, a song that peaked at 19 in Canada and 31 in Australia.
At #6 this week- and it would spend the next three at #5- the Beach Boys and Surfer Girl, which peaked at #3 in Canada and was #17 in Australia.
And at #2- from which it would hit #1 next week- the Canadian #1, Bobby Vinton and Blue Velvet. It would peak at #4 in Australia.
