Run Along with Milkha Singh. Even I tried !

Yes....

No........

Why not ??

Well fighting myself whether to jump on conclusion so fast and write a fan's review over my supposedly latest craze " Bhaag Milkha Bhaag". Been waiting for a year... not months just to see this movie and there is a reason for that " Mr. Farhan Akhtar" .

I did see it last night and my first impressions were that it fell short of my expectations. Why ? Well because a.) I think my overexpectation killed it.  b) I had the worst possible seats for a movie ever (front row, corner seats) for supposedly "the best movie" of this year.

Honestly, I haven't slept well since last night and I am still sort of disheartened over why I couldn't "WOW" myself out of the theatre yesterday. Hard times, I know.

Without stretching my agony further let me break down to finer bits :

  • The movie is shot well and gives us an authentic feel of Milkha Singh's time.
  • Farhan has done probably more than he could. He is one example of supreme hardwork and dedication in a cinema that is ruled generally by mindless potboilers for killing time. I respect him probably more than anyone else ever. The effort is not only in his physical stature developed for this movie, that was there for the movie to look as authentic it could to the life of an athlete (or even more) and to keep some superfluous peeps happy (probably, I could be wrong too). Having said that doesn't mean it wasn't very cool to look at his effort. However, the real hero lies in his simple, straightforward , in-your face man who struggles at various junctures of his life to be someone extraordinary. His pain every time he runs, falls, gets hurt (stone incident, running without shoes) is very believable and overwhelming.
  • The music and lyrics are TOP NOTCH. My only sincere complaint that the rock version of title song should've been used for the finale of the movie.
  • Some scenes are stretched too much and probably not required. I felt like I was always waiting for something great and substantial to happen. And whenever the movie felt like it was gearing towards that stage it just becomes still or I don't know what (can't explain).
  • The movie has been made in patches which are not shown with greater detail of connection. It's greatness lies in different moments. I might be wrong but I feel there was some sort of lack of cohesion in connecting different instances of Milkha Singh's life.
  • The portrayal of Milkha singh's coach (final coach, Ranvir Singh) wasn't awe inspiring. The coach could've been someone with more "josh" . It let me down, frankly.
  • We could've done without the special effects in places like where Sonam & Farhan were on the bridge where it was clear that the scenery wasn't real. Although, it wasn't bad like many other Hindi movies, just that we could've had something more authentic to keep the movie as grounded as it really is.
Ok, lets wrap it up with that. All of the above views are highly personal and are not meant to degrade any of the characters or anyone's hard work. The "not so good" points I've pointed out probably were made they this way only to stay true to the portrayal of the lead character's life and his accomplices.

Again, I would like to bask in the glory of Farhan's effort as an actor in it. There only so much he could do, he couldn't have glamourised the role (as somewhere I expect). Stayed so true and grounded to the athlete's portrayal.

I am still blaming my over-expectation and bad seats for not liking the movie the way I had expected. Will watch it again in peace with a different perspective and hopefully better seats :)

For those who haven't seen it, I suggest you go an watch it, but mind you it is a bit long movie so yeah be prepared for that.

Peace out.
