Homeschool Kindergarten Day 6: The one where we lost 15

If I were to tell you my ultimate Homeschool goal it would be to not only teach my kid effectively, but to help him develop a love for learning. And this morning I realized for the past 5 days of our “official” homeschool life, I hadn’t ever asked him what he wanted to learn about. So today we snuggled up in bed and I asked him how he liked school and learning and what he’d like to learn about next. Without hesitation, he said he wanted to learn more numbers. Cool, we can do that!

I feel like he lacks some confidence in the number department. I know he can count to at least 20, because I’ve heard him do it when he doesn’t think anyone is listening. But if you ask him to count to 20 he clams up. I figured before moving on to even higher numbers, we’d stick with counting to 20 until he gets that confidence. Since he’s quite the fan of Flash Cards, I busted out our number flash cards and sat down to casually go over the numbers. He zoomed right through all the way to 14, then he’d get stuck. The number 15 turned out to be quite the roadblock today. He’d get to 15, and call it any other number, then move right on to 16 and up to 20. It was like 15 just didn’t exist to him. He finally said it all the way through once, and he seemed totally done with flash cards so we called it quits.

We kind of went about our normal day after that.

Well. Normal-ish.

Later in the evening I interrupted Basement Time and was met with great hostility.

Luigi shoots out of there. I did not feel safe.

We played another game of Jumanji (I did not win).

Then we headed up to bed with a doughnut because it felt like the right kind of bedtime snack tonight. He wasn’t even close to tired though so I pulled the Mead Preschool Workbook off the shelf and asked him if he wanted to do a page or two before bed. He was all about it, so we picked a page on patterns and worked until the call of the donut was too strong and we called it quits.

He ate while I read a Winnie the Pooh First Reader book. Then it was really time for bed.

I’m so glad I asked him what he was interested in learning about today. I need to make that a priority for everyday. And I think we’ll work a little more tomorrow on finding that pesky number 15.

P.S. I’d love for you to checkout my new favorites page on Amazon, where I have lists of products we genuinely use and love.
