Me & My Wheelchair

I have my new power wheelchair!! It is all powered up and ready to go.  Now I just need the $1900 lift installed in my van so I can actually go places with it (the chair weighs about 200 pounds). I’ve asked the MS Society for help and it looks like they will be able to give me about half the amount!! Yay!! So now I am scrambling for funding from other sources. One possibility is having another Craft Open House like I did in December.  That was a lot of work but really fun.

Little by little, I’m getting there and before too long I will be more independent, after being a virtual prisoner in the house for months. Who knew it would be a dream come true to be able to go to the supermarket again by myself?!? Or a bookstore or the fabric store or museum?  Or to visit my dad in the care facility he is living in?

It is depressing and exciting at the same time.

________

I decided to make a little tote bag for my chair. As I was measuring the arm to determine what size it should be my daughter said “Are you making a skirt for the chair?”

I just stared at her for a few seconds.

I will admit to having a rather high level of chintz and lace in my house. So sue me, I’m a girl. But a skirt? On my wheelchair?!?!

All I could finally say was “Just how big a dork do you think I am?” Her response? “Um, a really big one.”

Kids. Oy.

Here is the finished tote:

I guess it is pretty dorky.  But ever so practical.

Ryan, my granddaughter's dad, installed the new batteries for me (they are like car batteries).  He held up a piece of folded tin and said "This is nice, they sent you a cup holder."  Well, not exactly Ryan.  It was no gift.

That cup holder, which probably cost a dollar to make, cost me over $23.

A cup holder for the car from Walgreens costs $3.

Think they are soaking the disabled?
