The Best of 2017

I am such a sucker for “best of” year end rankings. Even though I go see exactly 1 or 2 new movies a year, I read all of the year-end lists like a film devotee. Admittedly, I’m not a culture critic but I do like my books and my shows so I thought I’d share a few of my favourites from the year with you, my dear readers. This is highly subjective, completely personal, and a great joy to me.

I look forward to hearing your favourites in the comments!

My 5 6 Favourite Non-Fiction Books

I tried – really! – to keep this to 5 books but it could not be done. (My first attempt at this list had 14 books.)

Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God: The Scandalous Truth of the Very Good News by Brian Zahnd

The Very Good Gospel: How Everything Wrong Can Be Made Right by Lisa Sharon Harper

Shalom Sistas: Living Wholeheartedly in a Brokenhearted World by Osheta Moore

Of Mess and Moxie: Wrangling Delight Out of this Messy, Glorious Life by Jen Hatmaker

Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay

Adopted: The Sacrament of Belonging in a Fractured World by Kelley Nikondeha

My 5 Favourite Fiction Books

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

The Break by Katherena Vermette

Sing Unburied Sing by Jesmyn Ward

Glass Houses (Inspector Gamache #13) by Louise Penney

This Is How It Always Is by Laurie Frankel

My Favourite Movie

Is this a big surprise? Wonder Woman

My 5 Favourite Album

Every Mile Mattered by Nichole Nordeman particularly the song Dear Me

*sob*

My Favourite Television Shows

Doctor Who: The Tenth Series (of course)

Anne (in the States, it’s called Anne with an E)

The Crown

Frankie Drake Mysteries

Baroness Von Sketch Show

My Favourite Doctor Who Episode

Of course this show gets its own category. On the record: perhaps the best series of Doctor Who ever. Twelfth Doctor might have replaced Tenth Doctor in my heart. Someone notify the Queen.

The most heart-breaking, haunting two-parter: World Enough and Time followed by The Doctor Falls

My Favourite Knitting Patterns

Love and Light Shawl

Ragman Sweater for Tinies

My Most Popular 2017 Blog Posts

I know I didn’t blog much this year – most of my energy has gone into book writing, preaching, and even my e-newsletter. But even so, it was another good year around the old blog and I’m grateful.

Powerful men who think they own women and are entitled to them isn’t exactly exclusive to Hollywood. I hear from a lot of women who met their Harvey Weinstein in a church office or at a youth event or at bible college.

Let’s hang out on Facebook!
