Wicked Dreams Action Civics Fair for Students in Cebu onOctober 28

A one-day School fair to be held at the Robinsons Galleria Cebu on October 28, 2018 will be highlighting tech-based projects from various schools across the Visayas and foster innovation in schools and the local community.

“The Wicked Dreams Action Civics Fair is a platform to feature student projects using innovation, digital media, and technology. The fair is basically a space for making their wicked dreams come true,” said Fleire Castro Third Media Team CEO who is lead event organizer.

“Apart from showcasing their projects, the fair will see participants pitching for the chance to get funding and mentoring for their ventures. Three lucky projects will be awarded seed money and mentoring for implementation in their schools and communities,” said Castro.

After the introduction of participants and opening of booths in the morning of October 28, the pitching competition and awarding will follow in the afternoon. The first place will get P25,000, second place P15,000 and third place P5,000 seed money for project implementation.

The Maria Montessori International School, SWU PHINMA, Dr. Caridad C. Labe Center for Excellence, GDG Cebu, Cebu Innovation Network, Cebu Animation Guild are the schools and organizations that made it to the fair’s final list of participants.

This list is the result of a process which began with the holding of group discussions with educators and announcements in selected schools last August 2018 and preliminary elimination of entries last September 2018.

“Through their respective project proposals, the participants will be asked to define a problem in their community relating to the theme of civic engagement that can solved using innovations in digital media and technology,” said Castro.

The organizers say the Wicked Dreams Action Civics Fair is part of the efforts to include innovation and industry skill level exposure in students’ education processes especially in light of the Philippines’ weak showing in the Global Innovation Index 2018 at 73 out of 126 countries.

“Our wicked dream is a future where every Filipino is given the opportunity to contribute to society through innovation and technology. Wicked Dreams aim to build an ecosystem where young Filipinos have the space to make innovative projects for their communities,” said Castro.

The judges for this year’s pitching contest are Frederick Amores, Director of the Department of Information and Communication Technology; Dann Diez, CEO of SEED4Com; and Fleire Castro, CEO of Third Team Media who is the brains behind the event.

Castro has mentored young entrepreneurs through the US Embassy’s Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative program, and also recently became a fellow of the of the US State Department’s Professional Fellowship Program where she was sent for six weeks to the US and worked with the youth of Mikva Challenge, where she got the inspiration from their Action Civics Showcase.
