Detained Senator Leila de Lima has been granted visitation rights this Christmas, but she is saddened by the fact that her mother would still not be able to see her during the occassion.

“I’m very glad and thankful that my request to be with my Family this Christmas and New Year was granted especially because I failed to be with them during the Lent and All Saints’ Day which are two very important occasions for the entire family. This is indeed an early Christmas present,” she said.

“But while I’m elated about the news on the visitation grant, it still saddens me that I cannot be with my mother over the holidays considering that she is still unaware of my current situation and we don’t want to use her misery and grief by giving her details about my unjust detention,” De Lima added.

Despite this, she claims to be in high spirits since her family and relatives will be allowed to spend Christmas with her inside the Philippine National Police Custodial Center in Camp Crame.

She earlier requested that the “no visitors day” rule during Mondays be lifted.

The Senator in her note asked to be exempted from the rule.

“Since both holidays fall on a Monday, a ‘no visitors’ day, and in the spirit of the Yuletide season, may I humbly request for exemption from the ‘no visitors’ rule for both days and accordingly allow visits from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” she said in her note.

De Lima on Dec 20 , confirmed that she, along with other PNP detainees, were allowed visits from family and relatives on Christmas eve.

Visitors may stay from the evening of the 24th until 1 am of the 25th, and December 25, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., also on December 31 until 1 a.m. the following day, and on January 1 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The senator is also set to attend a Christmas day mass alohg with her family and relatives.

The senator was detained since February after allegations escalated that she is involved in the illegal drug trade and that she assisted the perpetuation of the trade in the national penitentiary while she served as Justice Secretary.
