I really, really need sleep right now but I felt a strong conviction to write this post because I’ve been concerned about the misinterpretation of this song. Knowing that Big Hit’s a marketing genius, they probably meant to confuse us but I personally just don’t like it when things are misinterpreted although music is considered a form of art hence allowing the audience to interpret it however they like; but it’s a little different for this song because it does have a message much different from what it looks/sounds like from a first glance/listen.

So Dionysus was literally my least favorite song of the album initially, probably due to the whole rock vibe that felt out of place (although they did use guitar in RM’s Persona), and the initial impression of the song as I understood it without having read the entire lyrics. I think I had only listened to it once before watching BTS’ V Live from New York when they were doing the album release talk show where J-Hope talked about the story behind writing the song including how it came about, how hard he worked on it, etc. It was then that I decided to look up the lyrics and really tried to understand what they were trying to say. While I’m a fan of BTS, there are rare times that I don’t feel fully comfortable watching them (note that I don’t watch TV- the only thing I watch for entertainment is literally Bangtan TV, their music video, choreography and other official videos, some fan-made videos, and V-Lives). So I’ll be straightforward- I don’t like it when they drink on the show, or talk about drinking. I’ve had my share of mistakes made when I used to drink and party back in the days, and I’ve seen so many people ruin their lives because of drinking. I also despise the drinking culture in Korea, from how easily accessible alcohol is, to how it’s a normal part of a regular meal, to how heavily it’s promoted which actually shows how depressed people are there- to have to depend on a substance to “have fun.” So by now, you should have an idea why I wasn’t a fan of this song in the beginning. Yes, I thought they were talking about drinking alcohol because the chorus is literally, “Drink, Drink.” if you’ve seen the choreography, that’s what the dance depicts as well. But, here’s a big but- it’s actually a word play on the Korean word, Art- Art is pronounced, “Yeh-Sool” in Korean, and alcohol is “Sool.” The song is “surprisingly” about their creative process of making music, how painful and difficult the process is to a point where they feel like they’ve gotten drunk off of it. When Suga raps, he literally says that he’s drunk from having had too much art (Yeh-sool), as if describing how it sometimes drives him crazy. Having done creative work in the past myself as well as having worked with many creative teams, I know what they are referring to. I’ve heard people compare the process to giving birth even, especially when you hit a creative block where you just can’t seem to make progress and feel stuck when there is a deadline to be met. So yeah, sorry BTS for misunderstanding, but yes, please keep making great music without references to things that are unhealthy. My little niece loves you guys and I’m afraid to show her this video because she’s definitely going to be asking what “Mah-Shuh” means, and I’m already stressed.

예술가의 입장에서 느껴지고 경험하는 창작의 고통을 춤으로, 음악으로 디테일하게 참 잘 표현한 곡이라 생각되는데도 불구하고 ‘술’에 너무 집중되는 듯한 전체적 느낌이 좀 아쉽다. 워낙에 아이들이 많이 좋아하는 방탄소년단이라서 어른 입장에서 항상 그들이 영상에서 술을 마신다거나 언급하게되면 나도 모르게 조심스러워지는데 ‘디오니소스’는 그 부분이 워낙 하이라이트 부분이기도 하고 아무리 예’술’을 이야기 한다하지만 살짝 불편하다.. 물론 아티스트로서 당연히 표현의 자유가 있고 예술을 술로 표현한 부분도 정말 기발하다고 생각되긴 하고 잘했다고 박수 쳐주고 싶은게 팬의 입장에서 당연하지만 그냥 어린 아이들이 보고 물어볼 땐 어떻게 해야 가장 잘 설명을 해줄수 있을까 싶다. 방탄을 좋아하는 이유 중 가장 큰 하나는 외국 노래들이나 뮤직비디오와 다르게 쓰레기 같은 (욕, 여성비하, 성적 표현, 또는 필요 이상의 노출, 폭력, 돈을 우상시 하는) 내용이 거의 없어서 스트레스를 받는다거나 신경을 그리 쓰지 않고 소비자 입장에서 컨텐츠 소비가 가능하다는 점이다. 빅히트도 방탄소년단도 다른 그룹들과 회사들과 차별화되는 메시지와 스토리들로 구성하여 최고의 자리까지 올수 있었지만 그들도 이익을 창출해야만 하는 조직이기에 어떻게서든 버즈를 키우고 싶을 것이고 특히나 요즘처럼 그들에 대한 기대가 엄청나게 큰 시기에는 아마도 뭔가 더 튀고 특이한 것을 만들어 내야만 하는 압박을 충분히 받았을 것이라 생각된다. 이번 곡도 역시 그들의 전략이 적중한 것이 맞고, 또 그들은 어마어마하게 창조적인 조직인 것도 맞다. 그리고 데뷔초에 비해 가사에서 욕을 거의 찾을수 없는 면도 정말 너무 좋고 화려하고 멋진 무대 모습 뒤에 순수한 지방 청년들의 모습을 유지하고 있는 부분도 정말 너무 큰 매력으로 다가온다. 이 노래도 노래지만 그냥, 한국인들이 너무 아무렇지 않게 즐기는 술을 특히 영상에서 그들도 너무 아무렇게, 생각없이 즐기지는 말아줬음 하는 팬의 마음이 있을 뿐이다. 미국만 해도 그렇게 술을 매일 먹는 사람은 거의 없고 매일 마시는 사람은.. 음.. 심리 면에서 봤을때 ‘알콜중독자’다.. 한국에서 근래 몇년 살면서 진짜 놀랐던 부분이기도 하지만.. 술은 매일, 그렇게 아무렇지 않게 마시면 안되요….. 술 없이도 재밌을 수 있고, 그거 정말 잘못 마시면 실수 뿐만 아니라 삶이 안좋게 180도 바뀌는 사람도 많이 봐서 하는 말임다….. 물 마셔요, 물…. 힣 그나저나 끝부분에 의자에 앉아서 안무할때 심장 멎을뻔… 무슨 라스베가스에 온줄.. 브로드웨이, 베가스, 저리가라 할만큼 멋진 퍼포먼스여요..
