Netflix finally released the live-action Yu Yu Hakusho trailer, and it’s definitely hitting us right in the nostalgia.

The trailer opens with Yusuke Urameshi realizing he’s dead, only to be brought back again as a spirit detective. Familiar characters like Koenma, Botan, Genkai, Kurama, Hiei, and Kuwabara are shown throughout the trailer, alongside the villains Kakyo, the Toguro brothers, and even Bui and Karasu.

The costume and styling for each character remain faithful to their original designs in the anime, and we have mixed feelings about it. Some of the more hairstyles/colors (like Botan’s and Kurama’s) still look slightly cartoony for live-action, it’s a nice way to pay homage to each character’s iconic looks.

Directed by Shô Tsukikawa, Yu Yu Hakusho features Takumi Kitamura as Yusuke Urameshi, Jun Shison as Kurama, Kanata Hongô as Hiei, and Shûhei Uesugi as Kazuma Kuwabara.

The legacy of Yu Yu Haksuho

The Yu Yu Hakusho manga originally ran from 1990 until 1994, and was adapted into an animated series that originally aired from 1992 to 1994. With 78 million copies in circulation worldwide, the Yu Yu Hakusho manga is one of the bestselling manga series to date.

The anime series was also well-received worldwide. Here in the Philippines, it gained a huge following and is widely considered one of the most popular anime series that aired on local TV. Dubbed in Filipino and titled Ghost Fighter, the series aired on IBC 13 in the mid-1990s, and twice more on the GMA Network in 1999 after garnering positive reception and support from Filipino fans who voted for the network to air it a second time.

The new live-action series will premiere on December 14, 2023.
