Following the dawn of October 1, 1965, Indonesia entered a period of profound turmoil. The assassination of six Indonesian army generals on that very day led to allegations that the Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) was responsible for the attack.
Massacres, massif arrest, torture, and years of imprisonment without judicial process of those tied to the PKI or suspected of supporting communism marked the birth of the New Order military regime under Soeharto. This act of violence was done under the pretext of maintaining societal order, resulting in the tragic loss of approximately 500,000 lives.
Moreover, they controlled information through media and spread manipulative propaganda, emphasizing collective hatred towards those associated with communism.
The impact of that day was severe, causing fear across Indonesian society. Families were torn apart, friendships ended, and careers ruined due to accusations based on alleged affiliations. The orchestrated campaign to shape public opinion reached its zenith, blurring the line between truth and manipulation.
Over time, the military version of history became the dominant narrative ingrained in collective memory—one that persisted through generations.
Let’s save the date to remember the lives lost and honor survivors’ voices.
