If you take Thanksgiving and replace the family with friends, replace the turkey with everyday foods, and make everything unnecessarily fancy, then you’ll have my Friendsgiving 2021!
I teach a wonderful group of brilliant young adults and three years ago we started a tradition of having Friendsgiving the day after Thanksgiving. For this year’s Friendsgiving, everyone was instructed to dress every elegantly, as if they were going to a fancy restaurant. When they showed up to the event, the room was transformed into an upscale restaurant, complete with place settings and a menu of fancy foods.

For this year’s Friendsgiving, everyone was instructed to dress every elegantly, as if they were going to a fancy restaurant. When they showed up to the event, the room was transformed into an upscale restaurant, complete with place settings and a menu of fancy foods.
Except these foods weren’t fancy at all, because no one really wants to eat duck liver or pan-seared octopus at a Friendsgiving. Instead, I took regular comfort foods and gave them fancy-sounding names and plated them in an upscale way so everyone would have a Michelin-star meal experience without throwing up in their mouth after each bite.
For Appetizers, there were:
- Sweetened Berry Biscuits and Milk, otherwise known as Crunch Berries served in a large wine glass with the milk on the side, served in a champagne flute.
- Gourmet Marinated Chicken Skewers, otherwise known as chicken on a stick with a side of Chick-fil-A sauces.
- Chicken Spring Rolls
- Sweet and Savory Beef Pastry, otherwise known as Jamaican Beef Patties.
For the Main Course, there were:
- Mini Curseur De Boeuf with Pomme Frites, otherwise known as White Castle burgers with french fries. With this dish, if they didn’t order it in French, they couldn’t get it.
- Pepperoni Crostini, otherwise known as mini pepperoni pizzas.
- Grilled Beef Sausage with a Sliced Bun, otherwise known as a hot dog.
- Chinese Fried Rice and Mandarin Chicken, which is orange chicken and fried rice, but the description of the meal was in Chinese.
For the Dessert, there were:
- The Luxurious Ice Cream Experience, which was vanilla ice cream served in a wine glass with ice cream toppings on the side.
- “It’s Your Birthday,” which consisted of two Hostess Mini Bundt cakes with a lit birthday candle in them.
- Puréed Seasonal Fruit Pastry, otherwise known as Pop Tarts.
- A Trip to Belgium, otherwise known as a Belgian waffle with ice cream.
During the meal, we played games and then we ended the evening with pictures from two photo booth areas. At the end of the night, each person was given an Amazon gift card and an assortment of gifts to have as a keepsake to remember the fanciest, non-fancy dining experience that they’ll probably ever have!
