After Life Issue 1 Review – Indie Comic Review

This is a spoiler-free After Life issue 1 Review.

Though I do not think about my own expiration often, death is a common theme in my choice of entertainment. I die in video games. I watch horror movies and television shows. What happens after we die is filled with speculation, culture, and folklore. I was happy to find a Book this week that offered an interesting take on the subject.

About After Life #1

After Life is created by Miguel Angel Lozano Aleman. There are currently three issues available. The series premiered in January of 2019. The comic because available on Comixology on March 20th, 2019. After Life is a self-published horror mystery story.

Kraron has lived in the darkness. They have taken in the evil of this world. Now they are on the hunt to find God. It is no easy task, and nearly impossible without spilling a little blood.

After Life #1 Review

After Life’s artwork is just as dark as the plot. Since the pages are mostly black and based around darkness, the use of negative space is very important. The art in this book is nothing short of terrifying.

The coloring is phenomenal as well. Everything looks gritty and dirty, which perfectly fits the story. The book is black and white with splashes of red blood. The whole aesthetic is very unsettling.

My favorite aspect of After Life is the page layout. Many of the pages look exactly the same, except for the text and minor changes. The subtle changes in the pages intensify the strong dialogue of the characters. It feels similar to watching a horror movie and waiting for the inevitable jump scare.

Dark, gritty, and violent is exactly what I needed this week. I can’t wait to continue my journey with Kraron as they look for their diety. I would recommend this book to those who like dark and violent mysteries such as Nailbiter or The Black Monday Murders.

If you cannot wait for the next issue of After Life, there are supplemental materials available on the comic’s official website. These pages are called “Memories” and serve to add depth to After Life’s lore. There is currently one Memory available, and I thought it was an excellent addition to the story.
