Sorry for being late on this review! I wanted to review it the week it came out, but there are only twenty-four hours in each day. It takes me about 20 minutes to read an issue of a comic. That means I am reading about…a million comics every week. Nonetheless, I am excited to dig into the second issue of one of my favorite comics of the past year. Anything involving talking pigs is cool in my book.

Meth The Immortal Issue 2 Review

Meth: The Immortal is written and lettered by Kevin Dean Miller. The art is done by Kierston Vande Kraats. The second issue of the series premiered on August 1 2018. My review of the first issue can be found here. Meth: The Immortal is an action/adventure story surrounding an indestructible talking pig.

Meth and his friends, a small child and an archaeologist, decide to leave the Middle East and make their way toward America. They do not have a lot of money or connections. They are also in a strict and dangerous area of the world. This presents many obstacles for the characters, which cannot be overcome without a few laughs first. 

I love how Meth: The Immortal finds a good balance between silly jokes and a war-torn landscape. Politics aside, being subjected to a violent and unstable environment can have horrible side-effects and consequences. The characters in Meth: The Immortal have fun and humorous personalities which plays well against the dark backdrop.

This comic is also very good at juggling multiple plot points. We have the mysterious talking and immortal pig. We have a multinational adventure brewing. We have themes involving war, family, and culture. This book brings up a lot of ideas and finds a way to blend them seamlessly with each other. The story is engaging to the point where I did not find myself asking a lot of questions. I was focused on the adventure at hand and went along for the ride.

I feel as though the artwork is even better in issue two. One thing I have enjoyed in this series is the details found in the textures. The art style is not overly-realistic, but the textures on a lot of the objects do mimic real life. The blending of these two elements makes for a very interesting style that is fun to look at. I find myself going back through the panels just to soak in the little details.

This issue ends with a few lessons in comic-making from the creators. We get to see how the proverbial sausage is made (hopefully not immortal pig sausage). It was great to have a peek into their process. These pages also serve as a good starting point for those interest in making own comics.    

I am still hooked. I can’t wait to see where this comic series is going! What did you think of this issue?
