The Walking Dead #3 Summary and Review

The Walking Dead #3 Summary

Issue three of The Walking Dead picks up exactly where issue two left off. Rick has just been reunited with Lori and Carl at their camp outside of Atlanta. Much to Rick’s surprise, his friend and work partner Shane is also in the camp with them.

We are introduced to the other characters at the camp. Rick’s friend from the city is Glenn. There is another family, Allen and Donna. They have twins named Billy and Ben. There are two more men, Dale and Jim. Also, a woman named Carol is there with her daughter Sophia. Lastly, there are two sisters named Amy and Andrea.

Lori and Rick do some catching up. She was just doing what she thought was best for Carl. She thought that the hospital staff would continue to care for Rick. Sadly, that was not the case.

Rick reunites with his family in The Walking Dead issue 3.

The next day, Rick goes to take a shower in Dale’s camper. That is when Dale drops the bomb on Rick: Shane has been creeping up on his wife since they have been at the camp. Rick brushes this off. After all, Rick and Shane are best friends.

The women go to clean loathes while the men hunt. While Lori and Carol are excited about the new detergent, Donna does not see this as a cause for celebration. She sees the division of labor as being sexist. Donna worries that the collapse of society will also be the collapse of women’s rights.

Rick and Shane do some catching up while hunting. They come across a deer being eaten by a zombie. They ponder if the deer will be safe to eat.
As Donna, Lori and Carol finish up laundry, a zombie sneaks up behind them. Donna freezes in the line of fire. Luckily Dale saves the day by killing the zombie with an axe.

It look like Dale was right. As the issue comes to a close, Rick is consoling Lori about the zombie attack. Shane is standing off to the side and does not look happy at all.

The Walking Dead #3 Review

We meet a lot of new characters in this issue. Honestly, I had completely forgot about Jim. The story and lore of The Walking Dead is so vast that some of the early characters are hard to remember.

Shane introduces Rick to the group in The Walking Dead issue 3.

We get to see our first interaction between Carl and Sophia. How cute! There is much more where that is coming from!

I loved the conversation between Donna and Lori about the division of labor. Even though The Walking Dead is about the world ending, Kirkman has always added the nuance of sociopolitical issues to the book.

It looks like the Rick VS Shane feud is starting! Let’s keep reading.
