Be A Fool and 12 More Tips To Become A Writer

I’ve been updating this blog for over four years now. It happened to me a lot of time that I get stuck in coming up with an idea for a new Blog post. Whenever I update my blog, I conclude that I can’t Write any more of self-help.

But then it’s always my readers who encourage me to write more often.

I’ve found that when you stop thinking about yourself, stand in the shoes of others and look at their problems, something inspires you from within that drive you to take bold actions.

Ergo, when I write a blog, I think of my readers first rather than Writing for myself. How can I help them? What problem are they facing? How can I serve my purpose as a writer?

There are two kinds of writers. The one who writes fiction, take the readers to a new world. And the second type of writers believes in serving their readers in a best possible way. Whereas fiction writers play with the words to appeal to the senses of the readers, the non-fiction writers harness the knowledge of the readers to a new level.

All writers are colourful as well as different. They cannot be compared to one another.

I fall into the category of the second type of writers. I’m always in search of looking at the difficulties that most people face in day-to-day life. More often, my blogs come up as a solution to the problems faced by my readers. Even this blog is also an answer to a question requested by a reader.

I hope after reading this post, she finds what she was looking for.

Be a fool

I love reading quotations. While writing this, I’ve got the Oxford Book of Quotation by my side. Whenever I feel bored, I read the quotes either from the Oxford or go online.

Years before, I had read a quote which has stayed with me ever since. I’ve never been able to read it again. But I remember what the writer said, “Any fool can be a writer if he knows how to share his own experience.”

Quite frankly, I’ve been following the same quote since the beginning of my writing career. If you are telling what everyone has said before, you will never be able to draw the attention of the readers.

Using the words “I and You”work tremendously. A lesson shared with the readers by setting your example not only portraits your authentic image before them but also makes your point of view more acceptable.

Above all, when you share your experiences, the readers can connect your story with their own experiences.

Write fast, write junk

Our mind runs with a speed of a rocket. The challenging work for a writer is to cope up with his thinking process. Catching up with the brain is an art.

Almost every writer uses a laptop or a desktop. Writing on a laptop saves your time as you can backspace what is not best. So, you’ve to be good in your typing speed.

Write fast, write junk. You can arrange your thoughts after completing your first draft.

While creating your first draft, do not let your grammatical mistakes, incorrect sentence formation hold you back. The thing matter most is how quickly you can have your mind on the paper.

Work in compartments

Write in the intervals. Writing 30 minutes works best for me. After 30 minutes, I take a break for 10 minutes or so.  I practice deep breathing in the 10 minutes of break.

As I return to my writing process, I again practice “brain draining” process and bring my experiences, opinions and the story I’ve in my mind on the paper.

Write Again

You can’t come up with a decent blog post in a single shot. You’ve to write it again and over again until you bring it before the world. Remember, you are writing for your readers. You inspire them. You cannot just go on throwing your writings to them and expect them to appreciate.

The more you spend your time in creating the content, the better it is. Believe me, today or tomorrow, your faithful readers will find you.

Read

Writing is similar to your motorcycle. If you do not fuel your bike, you can’t go any farther. Similarly, if you fail to feed your mind with new vocabulary, phrases and grammatical rules, you cannot improve your writing.

A balanced diet cannot help you lose weight if you do not exercise. To see the best results, both should go parallel to each other.

Reading and writing should be done simultaneously. As you read every day, you should commit yourself to write every day.

Write Every day

About four years ago, when I started writing, it took me 5 to 6 hours in writing 1000 words. Today I can write the blog post with same word count in less than an hour. How? Practice is the mother of all invention.

Writing is much of a habit than something that can be taught to you.

Write 500-1000 words for 30 days in a row. You’ve to focus on developing a habit. No matter how good or bad you write, write every day. Once you form the patterns in your brain, you will naturally become good at writing over time.

Writer’s block is a myth

If you know what to write, where to take your story and what plot you’re going to follow, you’ll never encounter writer’s block.

If you are a beginner, you might fall into the trap “what to write?” but if you follow the rule#2 (Write Fast. Write Junk) you will be able to complete your project within the deadline.

Of course, if you ask me to write a post on Indian History, I won’t be able to write it as fast as I write self-help articles. Make sure you are writing about the topic you are passionate about.

Figure out the vocabulary

Every genre has its vocabulary. A writer writing romance uses the words that sound good to your ear, whereas a writer writing a thriller, use a different kind of vocabulary. A thriller writer uses the phrases that will affect a different part of your brain and prompt different emotions in you.

Again, you will develop the vocabulary by reading the genre you’re passionate. Read the writers you love and then steal their vocabulary. Use it in your writing.

Avoid distractions

Ha! People say I’m not active on social media. Is it a compulsion to update photographs now and then to prove that you’re alive? I go no more than an hour on social media every day.

You’ve got one life, and I’m 100% sure that it’s not for wasting it on social media.

Stop being perfect

No one is perfect. Even if you have brought out the world’s best content, you’ll find someone reprimanding your hard work.

Take the father of modern English, W. Shakespeare. Many, many authors chastised him.

Even Samuel Pepys went on to say, “We saw Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, which I had never seen before, nor shall ever again, for it is the most insipid ridiculous play that ever I saw in my life.”

Write for readers

If I had to write for myself, I would be writing on different topics. I love watching and playing cricket and volleyball. I could write on that. But does it help my readers in any way?

You are at your leisure to write anything in fiction, but if you want to do blogging, stick yourself to one genre. The Internet is full of websites. If you do not provide value to them, they will most certainly leave your site.

You don’t have to be creative

Creativity is an overrated word. In this whole blog, the only time I used my creativity is writing the headline.

Of course, most of the people look at the headline first and then decide whether to read it or not.

Unfortunately, people judge the book by its cover. Notably, Indian writers stand out in coming up with the unique titles.

Nothing happens overnight

Nothing happens overnight. I’ve been writing for over the years now. I’ve read a lot, and through learning, I found what works for me and what not.

You can’t expect yourself to master the art of writing overnight. You have to schedule your day and spend at least 3-4 hours every day for years to learn your craft. But most importantly, you’ve to make writing a daily ritual.
