The fist chapter of my pending novel- the magic trials

There is a house deep in the forest where only the monsters go at night. The house is quaint with green shutters and a stone path leading through a garden but something is different and distant about this house. No one dares go into these parts of the forest except the Creature Hunters. As far as the people of the land Gardillia know, no Creature Hunters remain.
Soon a distant humming sound echoes through the forest and the animals stirr. The only thing this noise could be is a Creature of the Depth. Ferocious beasts that come in different kinds and Magic types and are some of the hardest things to defeat in battle. These are the exact thing that killed off the Creature Hunters.
She finds the beast as fast as possible. Silent and mysterious Deori sliced through the brambles of the forest with her magic blade Glandi. Possessing the power to cut through almost anything and everything this blade was her life. It had saved her from the Creatures of the Depth many times before. Living in solitude as a Creature Hunter was hard as usually it took many people to kill a Creature, but Deori was different. Deori possessed power like no other Creature Hunter before her. The only Creature Hunter who surpassed her was Fi.
Slicking through the forest Deori tracked the large bird-like Creature of the Depth. This one had feathers the size of the and talons the same size too. Deep dark feathers of gold shimmered on the back of this beautiful creature but Deori wasn’t fooled. Once they saw a living creature they would kill it in seconds. Any animals living on this side of the forest had to adapt to hiding in seconds if needed. Usually it was.
As Deori followed the bird it started picking up pace. Now running Deori lept after the bird. Seeing a chance she through the magic blade in front of her and jumped off of it using it as leverage to get to the birds height in the sky. As she flew through the air she put out her hand and summoned her blade. She aimed and struck the Creature through the wing making it lose it’s balance. She jumped on her blade once more this time landing on the bird itself. Thrashing through the sky the giant Creature starting throwing Deori off track.
“Crap you dang bird! Just stay still!” She muttered
She took her hand and summoned her blade then cut the bird’s wing off its body, leaving a bloody trail as it fell twenty feet to the ground. The Creature tried to keep itself up in the air but couldn’t. But the battle wasn’t over yet. The golden bird started snapping with it’s beak and fangs and struck Deori in the arm making her gush out blood. She let out a piercing scream and sliced off the other wing from the bird making it lose all of it’s air. Falling fast Deori stabbed the Creature in the heart. She fell but luckily the bird softened her fall but she still got knocked out.

Waking up shocked Deori looked around. She was now in a small cottage much like her own, but more quaint. Plaid blue and green curtains hung from the windows in the room where she lay. Shelves and shelves full of medicine and herbal remedies lined the walls, along with lots of books. Rows full of books. The rose painted walls were barely visible through the stocked shelves. She looked down at the rose patterned bedding and started to stand.
A loud clatter like thunder arose from the other room. Deori stood up and cracked open the door peering through into the room that lay before her. A girl around the age of fifteen stood in the next room. She was very pretty. Long silver-colored hair flowed out of the pigtails and all the way to her knees. Even though she looked troubled as she picked up the pots that had clattered to the ground, her face was delicate and charming.
Compared to the plain Deori she was a princess. Deori had dark brown hair that came to her shoulders and bark brown eyes. This girl’s eyes sparkled a brilliant light blue. Deori wore an emerald green shirt that hung off her shoulders and was long and went past her bottom. Her pants a tattered black and the hems only lay above her ankles. The girl wore a pastel blue dress that went with her eyes, it’s stitching was silver just like her hair. Even though the dress was plain she wore a necklace with a small bottle attached to the chain that was filled with mysterious blue liquid.
“Oh I see that you are up.” The girl said surprised to see another watching her.
“U-Um yes I am.” Deori stuttered
“May I ask why you were watching me?”
“Well I just woke up a second ago and I was trying to find out where I was and who brought me here.” Deori said thinking quickly
The girl came over and opened the door all the way to she the new guest.
“May I ask your name?” The girl asked politely
“My name is Deori. Yours?”
“I am Melody. I found you in the woods unconscious on a Creature of the Depth. I was worried about you and wanted to know why you were on that Creature so I brought you to my cottage.”
“Your cottage? Are you all by yourself?” Deori asked concerned
“Yes. It gets kind of lonely here though.”  Melody added sadly
“Where is your family?”
“They didn’t understand me and my magic. They never really loved me, only criticised me and yelled at me for using my magic.” Melody scolded at the memory.
“How old were you when you left?”
“Only thirteen but I knew that unless I got into a big fight I could keep myself alive and still probably  I see your arm is better.”
Deori looked to her arm and saw the slash from the beak of The Creature of the Depth gone.
“How did you…” Deori slowly said completely agast
“I use healing magic. All I had to do is find the right plants for the job sometime before now and use the healing magic from it and then I could use that healing remedy whenever I need it. All I had to use was my healing magic from a madili plant for the unconsciousness and the Ulani flower’s magic to help with your wound.” She said as she picked up the last pot
“So you just have to find a plant and you can use it’s magic forever?”
“Pretty much.” Melody replied “There are some exceptions though. I am not able to use magically grown plants from a person but other plants are fine.”
“That kind of magic is extremely rare you truly have a wonderful gift.” Marveled Deori
“I guess but I wonder why my parents couldn’t see that. I sense some strong magic from you as well.”
“I am the last remaining Creature Hunter.” Deori said sadly as she summoned her blade Glandi.
“I have heard about those. That is amazing that you survived the Creature of the Depth massacre.”
“It killed all of my family and all of my village. All that remained was me and my mentor Fi.”
“She must be a proud woman.” Melody added
“She is dead.” Deori said trying not to cry “She died teaching me. My rage from her death made me into who I am and challenged me to become better. I have killed all of those hideous beasts I have found in the past three years. For the lives they took from my own people.”
“Three years?”
“The massacre happened when I was fourteen. Here I am concerned about you and you are a year older than I was. Granted I did have a mentor.”
“The past does not need to be discussed at a time like this. In a few days the magic trials begin. May I assume that you are under twenty?” Melody asked
“I am seventeen but what is this magic trials you speak of?”
“The magic trials happen every five years for everyone that has magic from the ages fifteen to twenty. You were only twelve last time the magic trials happened and you will be twenty-two next time so you don’t have to endure it twice but some have to.”
“But what what is it?”
“The magic trials is a test of skill and magic power to find out who can join the Magican Army.”
The Magican Army is the magic army of the most powerful wizards. These wizards were chosen through the Magic Trials by the Magican Council. After the Magican Council of Evil took over the city of Yanhara (The forest that Deori and Melody live in is the Yanhara forest located on the outskirts of the Yanhara town one of the largest towns in Gardillia.) they planned to take over the rest of Gardillia with their magical forces.
“The weak would just be a burden to the Magican Army so the leaders of the Council of Evil decided to make a test to see who was worthy. The Council of Evil are a mean bunch though made up of the thirteen voices of the council and some of the most powerful wizards in Gardillia.” Melody explained as she sat down and pointed to a closeby rocking chair
“I don’t get some people. Using other lives for slave work. But how will they make me? What if I refuse?” Deori scolded as she relaxed in the chair
“Every time a child is born in Yanhara the council places a magic marking on the newborn that acts as teleportation magic that doesn't allow that person to go out of the boundaries of the area assigned. That is why there are those three dots on your wrist. That is the mark of Vera.”
“That is some intense magic. I can’t believe someone is capable of putting a spell on almost a person a day!”
“Yes the magic in the Council of Evil’s voice members is strong. Every member has a different power and all is exceptional and scary.”
“I sure don’t want to meet a voice.”
“No one does. Now can you help me with the soup?” Melody asked getting up from her sadly short stay at the plush chair
“Sure, after all you are lending me your hospitality.” Smiled Deori as she stood up
A small scream awoke from Deori’s mouth as she slightly scraped her now not wounded arm on the side of the chair.
“Are you ok?” Melody asked with slight panic in her voice
“Yes I don’t completely know what happened though. It was just a small scrape.” Deori reassured Melody who was completely puzzled as well.
“I know what happened. I left out a spell to heal you. When I was in the forest I was looking for the Kamhari mushroom and that was when I found you. See, the Kamhari mushroom heals the after pain when the wound itself is gone. Much like a bruise but a terrible one because of the size of your wound. If you are up to it after supper we can go back into the forest and look for the healing mushroom.” Melody replied hastily
“Anything to help you. Thank you so much for all the help.”
“Ok. So time to make the soup. Can you start the fire please?” Melody said as she searched for the right pot
Summoning her blade, Deori struck the wood of the fire with the magic sword lighting a fire instantly.
“Well, I could use your help like every day of my life. It takes me ages to get a fire started. Say, can your blade chop up the veggies?” Melody half joked
“Sure can! She swung the blade over the freshly washed vegetables and cut them into soup sized bits.
“That was amazing. It only took you six seconds to cut up the vegetables that take me six minutes! All I have to do now is make the broth, put in the veggies, and wait for it to cook!” said the astounded Melody.
Deori smirked and sat back down it the rocking chair, still exhausted after her last hunt. Smiling as she fell asleep, she felt the most joyful she had for a long time.

Deori was on the roof of her house that had seen better days before the massacre. The air was frigid and cold and silence hung in the sky.
“Help me! Somebody please help me!” Deori screamed out as her voice echoed through the ruins of the village
Darkness fell on the lost village and the moon came out as it shined a brilliant gold. It reminded Deori of something. Something warm and familiar. A woman appeared from the shadows and all that Deori could see was the outline of her face.
“Help please… Help.” Deori stammered into the dark
The woman emerged from the shadows to reveal a marvelous face and golden hair the color of the moon. She took Deori by the arm and whispered as soft as the air around them.
“I can’t help you.”
“No… Please help me… everyone… they're gone… even little Lucy….”
The woman took Deori and grasped her shirt tightly as her fingernails pierced holes in Deori’s flesh. She outstretched her arm as Deori looked down and saw the pit of darkness below her. The woman took Deori and pushed her her off the building as Deori screamed, and then when her screams stopped the woman muttered to herself.
“I can’t help you. You killed me.”

“Wake up Deori it’s time for supper!” Melody exclaimed happily. “Deori?”
Deori gasped and started breathing heavily. She was quite shaken up after her nightmare and was trying to calm herself down. Melody was a little confused too, but she knew it was a nightmare's time for supper Deori. “Wake up.” Melody cooed to wake up the sleeping girl “Man, you are in a sweat. Are you ok?”
Deori gasped and started breathing heavily as she sat upright in the chair. Still panicked from the nightmare she closed her eyes and tried to relax.
“I am fine I really am.” Deori said slowly
“Okay well come eat some soup. Maybe that will help.”
Deori walked over to the tiny table and sat down. She calmed herself down because she thought about how much she was overreacting but she wasn’t so sure about that.
“Thank you for the soup.” Deori said politely
“No problem! After all, you did help me with it.” Melody replied after slurping a bit of her broth.
Deori was ravenously hungry and she scarfed down the delicious vegetable soup.
“This soup is so good!” Deori exclaimed “I have never eaten anything this good in my life!”
“Now that I think of it, what do you normally eat?” replied Melody
“Mostly wild mushrooms. The Creatures are poisonous so I can’t eat them, which is a shame saying that I have killed so many of them.”
“Wild mushrooms are not very filling. No wonder why you were so hungry.”
As Deori finished her fifth bowl of soup, she happily sighed. The filling taste of the broth and vegetables settled in her stomach. Melody is a wonderful cook and had learned the trade by helping out at her parent’s cafe as a child. Many days were spent as Melody tried to find out the perfect broth for soup, one that would melt in the customer’s mouths. Melody was very into the soup making business and people came from different cities to have a taste of her wonderful soup.
“Anyway how bout we get going and into the forest to find that mushroom.” Melody said “You eat wild mushrooms so you will be a big help when we look!”
“I should know what type of mushroom you're looking for if you can give me a description of it.”
“Here.” Melody said as she pulled out a book “This book should have a picture of the plant we are looking for.”
Flipping to the table of contents Melody muttered the page number under her breath several times after finding it. As she flipped to the page the book’s yellowed pages spread dust around the room. Coughing Melody looked at the page. On it was a picture of a pink mushroom with blue spots. There was several other images around it of the mushroom. Some with the image moving as if you were circling around the sparkling mushroom, others as if you were landing from the sky and looking directly at it.
“Here we are. The Kamhari mushroom.” Melody said
“I think I have seen this but the journey to get this mushroom is dangerous. It only grows on top of Devil’s Peak one the highest mountains in the Yanhara Forest.” Deori replied concerned
“Well that is where we need to go anyway!”
“Ok I guess. Anyway if we want to make it before dark we better get going.”
Melody seemed very happy to be going out but Deori on the other hand was kind of annoyed. She probably thought it was a bother and was a dangerous endeavor for the little Melody. As Melody was packing her bag she was humming a little tune.

“Here we are, Devil’s Peak.” Deori said as they reached the mountain
“This is what we have to climb?” Melody asked with almost a hint of fear in her voice
“Yep. You said you wanted that mushroom, so we are going to get it.”
As they started climbing the steep mountain Deori realized that there was an easier way to get to the top. Her blade had served as a trampoline last time she hunted and could get them up quicker. She knew her blade could help in this situation.
Deori summoned her sword and held it to the sky. Light dove out of the blade and shined a beam into the sky. Melody looked up aghast and silently awed the magic light. As the light dulled, Deori shot the light at Melody and allowed her to take flight for a short while. If the spell was used to many times, the power would slowly de drained out of Deori. Use on herself would prove more catastrophic results.
“Wow.” Melody whispered, totally absorbed in the wonderful light.
“That spell will allow you to fly for a short while. We should move quickly. If the spell wears off in the night we will have to take shelter in a nearby cave, and that won’t be fun.”
Melody nodded in agreement as the sun started to fall into the horizon. Using the blade’s flight magic Melody made her way up the steep mountain. Deori used her blade as a platform to bounce off of and together they were going up the mountain at great speed
“Flying really takes the breath out of you.” Melody panted as she made it halfway up
“I guess it does but I have never got the chance to try.”
“Why not? You are the one with the spell aren't you?”
“Well of course I am, but if I use the spell on myself I can be drained of my magic and may never be able to use it again.”
Melody yawned as the sun finally set all the way and created a path of darkness in it’s wake. The sounds of the night animals started as the air grew colder. The wind picked up and Melody shivered. The only light on the mountain was coming from her.
“Let's hope the magic doesn’t wear off soon or we will have to stay put until morning.” Deori sighed
As Deori spoke Melody whisked around the air, creating trails of light around the dark sky. Not hearing the words spoken by the older girl Melody flied carefree. Deori smiled at Melody as she happily hummed in the sky. Melody ventured farther beyond Deori, as Deori tried to keep up. Melody was barely in sight when the light started fading.
“Melody! Come back here!” Deori yelled “MELODY!”
Melody heard Deori’s voice and started heading back. Deori sighed and smiled as she looked around for a cave to spend the night. Even if she could create more light Melody was getting tired and to be honest, Deori was a little sleepy too.
Deori looked up and saw Melody’s light almost gone.
“MELODY HURRY!” Deori yelled
Melody looked up and raced towards Deori. She had a look of great panic on her face as she hastily flew.
“DEORI!” Melody screamed as the light vanished “Help me! I can’t move!”
Melody panicked as she lost the ability to fly. Stopping straight in her tracks all she was doing was levitating right over the side of the mountain. Deori jumped on her blade and tried to grab hold of Melody’s arm to keep her from falling. But it was too late.
“Deori!” Melody cried as she fell onto the ground two-hundred feet below.
