Painting My Walls White

I painted the walls of my room white last weekend.

I've realized the importance of being mindful of our own space nowadays. I never really thought about having a good dedicated space for work in my house before quarantine season happened. I used to have a small space in the storage room, but after a while it didn't really work out, mainly because I felt it was too cramped, what with all the exercise equipment and storage items sitting inside with me as I type typed away on my work laptop.

Not that they're alive and breathing and working away like I was, but simply being there with a lot of random things occupying the same space I was in distracted me eventually. So I tried working in a different room for a while, but later on thought of wanting to arrange the furniture and change things up a bit, to decorate the walls here and there. I was never really the type of person who'd stick things up on the wall, even the space back in the office I would say is quite bare.

The corner of my room where all the work happens

But in order to help my brain out with distinguishing areas for work and areas for rest, I felt like some change was needed. I felt the need to acquaint myself with my working environment, to actually enjoy working and know I can do some deep work in a space I can call my own.

Which is why in my effort to personalize my area a bit, I decided to paint the walls. We only have white paint currently, which I thought was just right. As much as I'd like to be experimental and try out a much more adventurous color, I think it's good to make do with what I have for now. I failed to take a photo of the walls before, so I'm only able to show you the after, which I think is much brighter, cleaner, and lovelier, I'd like to think!

This is where I lie down for a bit to rest and focus my eyes on my paintings, away from the laptop screen

To personalize it even more, I decided to stick some things up my wall, such as my paintings, a postcard, and a printout of my scales and arpeggios, so I'll always be reminded that I need to warm up first with my flute before actually playing the main piece right away. To share with you more on the details of what I decided to stick up my wall:

(Upper left) My painting of The Neighborhood Cat Who Sometimes Naps in our Garden. He is always welcome, if you ask me.

(Leftmost) My painting of my favorite scene in the Tim Burton film, Big Fish.

(Middle bottom) A postcard I bought during that one time I was in Oxford, England. Oxford was definitely one of my favorite cities in my England trip with family.

(Upper right) My painting of that one peaceful moment in the Prime Meridian in Greenwich London.

The two print outs with notes would be my scales and arpeggios for flute.

I plan to switch up the paintings I'll be sticking up on my wall from time to time. But for now, I'm sticking with greens because this color relaxes me and keeps me calm. Green reminds me of the many things I love, such as the rolling hills in the English country side, parks, gardens, and basically places where nature thrives and blooms.

On an another note, I've conquered my fear of climbing up ladders. My ceiling may not be very high, but I was able to reach them by taking three steps on the ladder. I've been on the safe side when it comes to heights; I didn't want to fall and break any of my bones, but I did what I had to! And it was well and satisfying in the end.

There's just this nice feeling of doing something by yourself. DIY as they say; there's nothing quite like having a personal touch in the things we create and in the spaces we inhabit.

Moving on to this weekend! How's your weekend going?

It was a long weekend here in Manila. We may not have gone out anywhere, but it's just so nice to have an extra day to go in slow-motion. To be idle and calm is foreign to us on most days, especially on weekdays, but I hope we were able to take our time this weekend.

I'll be sending the first email for my newsletter within the day, as well! It's thrilling for me, as I feel like I'm writing and sending personal letters. Have you signed up?

Dear reader, thank you for your time with me. : - )
