My Experience with STARZ

The only thing I knew about Starz growing up was if I wanted to watch it on TV I had to pay extra money and my parents weren’t playing about extra charges. However, my boyfriend is a Power addict.

In July we went to Galveston on vacation. That Saturday night, he made me stay up extra late so we could catch the newest Episode. He’d been telling me that I needed to get into it but I’m what people would call and avid procrastinator, meaning I would “get to it later.” He convinced me that if I liked the episode, I’d have to watch every episode.

Sure enough, I was eyeballs glued trying to figure out what Ghost’s next move was going to be and why Angela was so two-faced. When we got home from our vacation I immediately signed up for the $8.99 service.

It took me about two weeks to catch up on every episode. Thankfully they were still in the middle of the fourth season, so I waited for every Sunday at midnight to see the next episode. I was consumed.

So consumed that I told my parents they had to watch it. “Mom, it’s a little nasty for the first two seasons but then it gets into the plot and you have to watch it. I’m going to keep my STARZ so you can watch it.”

I kept my account. August came, they hadn’t started. September came, they hadn’t started. October came, and STARZ Charged me twice.

If I haven’t made it clear before, I’m a broke college student. If you accidentally overcharge me $1.09 I will probably dispute it. Because I need it. And STARZ had me bent sideways thinking an extra $8.99 was forgivable.

I messaged them on Twitter, as well as called and emailed them. A couple of days after they emailed me back with a case number, I checked my credit card transaction history. They charged me four more times.

I proceeded to email them again to inform them that I was irate. They tried to finagle almost an extra $45 from me. I messaged them multiple times on Twitter that I was table-flipping angry. They messaged me back saying they’d refund me and cancel my account. Why, thank you STARZ.

However, they only refunded me for the additional four charges. They completely disregarded that they’d already overcharged me once before. Meaning I’m still out of $8.99 and they’re up an extra $8.99.

Am I glad they were able to at least address the major portion of the issue? Yes. However, I don’t think it’s normal that I should have been charged that many times anyway. It was a major inconvenience. Not to mention they weren’t easy to work with until they saw they went overboard. When they charged me once, I was ignored on Twitter and put on a 20-minute wait on the phone. Once they realized they really messed up, they were incredibly prompt. I think that says something about their customer service.

Will I purchase STARZ again? Yes, when the fifth season of Power is released. Do I want more people to be vigilant of the way they charge your accounts? Absolutely. Don’t let them overcharge you for anything. Check your transaction history regularly and be ready to dispute these companies.
