Stuck at 25% for 8 Months

Tags: mess string stuff

Laughing my ass off. This is real shit. The game’s overall completion level is at 25% and it has been that way for quite a while. There are of course reasons for this, and they are all very good ones.

This run of work within this range of progress has been critical because it’s being presented to Epic Games. They’re not really expecting as much as I’m putting out, but I don’t Mess around. I want these days of work to be rewarding for them as well, as a result of their support. That would be me attaching a string to their no strings attached thing. This stuff is for the goodness of gaming.

All of what is being developed at this point are things which will be made useful for the rest of the game; systems of play which need to be completely functional to avoid massive refactoring down the road when the game becomes larger.

It was only two months ago that this game was kind of a glitchy mess. Now there are barely any that can be discerned by more casual play, if you can call it that. This game is hardcore even in Champion difficulty, which is the introductory challenge for newcomers. When I let others in to play the game, they’re not stress-testing it nearly as much as I am, although in the earlier stages, funny bugs were revealed as a result of strange things being overlooked when I’m going at it by myself.

Every area in this game is so tight now. It’s all very well defined to the point that if you don’t like it, you have bad taste, and it’s not my fault. I wake up every day to comb this out so that the experience is as fluid as it can possibly be. The combination of redesigning systems and cutting out content to replace it with better stuff has pushed the production levels to exactly where it needs be. It’s not a matter of perfectionism. Perfect doesn’t make any sense. It’s a matter of doing what needs to be done without any excuses. We have no bullshit around here. Remember when games were put on cartridges and discs without any ability to patch or update them? This kind of development is the spirit of that. We’re allowed to make updates and patches today, but I’m pushing forward in a way so that I don’t have to apologize for showing you a modern-day mess. There is way too much of that going on.

We’re right on the verge of tackling 25.1%. Milestones have been hit. It’s time to move forward.
