Figure Out Your Skill Level

The first step is to figure out your skill level and find out where you are right now. Do you have the aptitude to charge people money for your services, or are you still an amateur, tinkering around at the edges?

The best way to do this is to run through all the most common handyman activities and give yourself a rank out of ten. For instance, how would you rate yourself on painting, home repairs, plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work?

If you’re pretty good at all of these, you might want to consider becoming a handyman. Having a broad range of skills is an excellent way to gain quick entry into the industry. The moment you start solving problems for homeowners, the more likely they are to talk favorably about you to their neighbors and in the community.

Learn Things You Don’t Know

The next step, of course, is to learn things you don’t know. Find out your weak points and then address them so you can take advantage of opportunities that come your way, which may be few and far between at the start of your career.

Obtain Licenses And Skills

After that, you’ll want to obtain various licenses and certifications. You may need these to convince insurers to cover you, or if you want to work legally.

If you’re not sure what licenses you need, check with your local authority. Government should keep a list of requirements on its website, depending on the type of work you want to do.

Build A Toolkit

After that, the next step is to build a toolkit for your chosen handyman specialty. Any toolkit you construct should contain screwdrivers, torque wrenches, hex keys, sandpaper, various drill bits and a drill, pliers, and other specialist equipment you might need, depending on the jobs you encounter on-site.

When building a tool kit, ensure you keep everything organized. Choose well-known toolbox brands, and even buy prebuilt kits, as long as they offer high quality.

Start Gaining Practical Experience

The next step is to start gaining practical experience. You need to learn your craft. Doing this alone without any existing market capital can be challenging, so many handymen work with a firm first for a lower wage before branching out by themselves.

When you work with a company, you’ll receive a regular paycheck while gaining expertise at the same time. You’ll also have consistent work, allowing you to work on multiple problems to build your repertoire.
