How to Use Safety Posters Effectively

In the workplace, production might be key, but Safety is king. There are plenty of reasons for that but the two most important center around care for the employees while also protecting the company from any potential lawsuits.

You have probably seen a health and safety poster around your workplace without even thinking about it. No matter what kind of business you work for, health and Safety Posters can be vital as long as you know how to effectively use them.

Put Them in the Right Place

Health and safety Posters are most effective when they are clearly visible. Part of that means having them in the right location. You don’t want random signs in seemingly random areas, right? Make sure that the posters go in places that make the most sense. If you have one for hand washing, it should probably be near a bathroom.

Having a poster posted in the wrong place can really make it ineffective. Either people can’t see it, which defeats the purpose of that poster, or it’s in the wrong area, which defeats the purpose of the poster. These posters can make a huge difference on safety but only if they’re in the right spot.

Don’t Group Safety Posters

Most people have short attention spans as it is. Most workers have a lot of things going on in their minds, meaning they aren’t paying attention to other things. You need to keep signs and posters simple so that it can catch their attention, if only for a moment.

If you put a bunch of different health and safety posters in one area, passersby might see one of them but there’s very little chance that they will stop and read all of them. Keep signs on their own and you will keep it simple enough that no one should miss it under any circumstances.

Keep Signs Simple

The most effective safety posters are the ones that don’t overcomplicate things. Even if the message can get a little wordy, there is a safety sign that can convey the message without having to post a dissertation on the sign. Besides, most people aren’t going to read all those words, rendering the sign basically useless.

Symbols and pictures are the best and most basic way to get that message across. Seeing the action or consequences of that action makes it pretty clear what can happen. There’s no need for a big message, especially one that can lose the attention span of those it should be reaching in the first place.

Know Your Audience

Safety signs aren’t a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. They can be tailored to meet your business’s specific needs and to appeal to your workers. If you want to keep the tone serious, it can be reinforced through a simple safety initiative. If you have a workforce that likes a little bit of humor, then that can be conveyed through the signage as well.

Take stock of what kind of signs might do best before putting them up. Not only will it help to avoid any issues but will ensure that people are noticing them.

High-Traffic Areas

If you have some signs with more general information, it is important to make sure that the most eyes see them. You want to put those posters up in places where everyone passes through. Think elevators, breakrooms, and entrances.

Even if they don’t stop to look or read it, the repetitiveness of walking buy it means they will probably read or look at it eventually. It makes the most effective use of those safety posters, especially the ones that go over specific regulations and rules.
