Fun Ideas for Making Your Own Purses

Tags: bag purses shirt

Making your own Purses lets you create gifts for others. You can create dozens of bags that you hand out to friends and family around the holidays. Once you feel more comfortable, you can even make bags that you sell online or locally. Companies like Coach charge hundreds of dollars for a basic Bag, but you can make your own that have plenty of room and pockets inside for storage. Check out some fun ideas that you can use to make bags from things around your home.

Denim Bags

Create new purses from old jeans that no longer fit and jeans that are too worn out for everyday wear. You’ll need to remove the seams and cut the denim into equal sized patches. For a simple tote bag, you can sew together those patches to create two large pieces that are the same size and then stitch those two larger pieces together. Some may like the look of an unfinished bag with frayed edges, but some prefer a more finished look. If you feel more confident in your sewing skills, feel free to add a lining and finish off the edges.

Sheet Purses

Create handbags and purses from sheets that feature classic characters like R2-D2, Strawberry Shortcake and Pac-Man. You’ll need to cut the sheets into pieces the same size as your finished bag and sew each piece of sheet together with a piece of colored fabric to create a lining. As sheets are so thin, adding a liner will keep the bag from falling apart. Experiment with rope, ribbon and other materials to create handles at the very top. You can even buy woven labels online to add an extra special touch to the bags you hand out as gifts.

Tee Shirt Bags

To make a purse from an old tee Shirt, turn the shirt inside out and stitch across the very bottom. You can then cut off the arms and cut across the very top to make a flat edge. Use a series of stitches to close the holes left behind by the arms. Once you flip the shirt inside out again, you should have a large pocket with the shirt design on the very front. Add embellishments, handles and even a lining to make a fun and functional bag. Have fun using these ideas to make bags for everyone on your gift list.
