Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was born to a Tamil Muslim family on October 15, 1931, in the Rameswaram pilgrimage center on Pamban Island, which was then part of the Madras Presidency and is now in the State of Tamil Nadu.
Even though Kalam's ancestors had been prosperous Marakayar traders, by the 1920s the family had lost much of its money and was living in abject poverty when Kalam was born. He received his physics degree from Saint Joseph's College in 1954. He decided to relocate to Madras in 1955 to attend the Madras Institute of Technology to study aerospace engineering.
