The Battle of Winterfell had “Game of Thrones” fans losing it on Twitter
As a die-hard Game of Thrones fan, the first thing I do after seeing a new episode is hop on Twitter to see what’s good. Usually I’m comforted to see that things I was thinking during the episode (like, HELLO, why was it all so dark last night?) are things my fellow Thrones people are thinking too, but mostly, I’m just there for the laughs. And the memes. Oh so many memes.

Last night’s extremely nail-biting hour and 22 minute Battle of Winterfell was breathtaking, heartbreaking, stunning, gasp-worthy, and a number of other exciting adjectives. Thankfully, so much of its greatness can be summed up in these completely framable tweets.
First of all, the darkness. Twitter damn near lost its mind at how poorly lit the battle was, and not being able to see who of our beloved characters was possibly dying only made the entire ordeal more stressful.

The first moments of light ended in the complete loss of the Dothraki army. When they pounded into battle toward the dead, howling and yelping, Melisandre-magic-lit arakhs held aloft, only to see them snuffed out like birthday candles in under a minute was not a great sign of things to come.

Like, after eight entire seasons of standing by Dany’s side, they’re just… gone? APPARENTLY.
Wait a damn minute…did we lose the ENTIRE #Dothraki civilization in one freaking episode? #GameofThrones pic.twitter.com/k3kyEwfv5j

It was honestly one of the most upsetting moments of the entire episode and it came so early. My shivers began in earnest at that point and didn’t go away until the very end.

But when Jorah returned from the Dothraki charge unscathed (but without Ghost, COME BACK DOGGO) we all breathed a little sigh of relief — while also verifying the color of his eyes.

Meanwhile, as the battle against an endless night raged outside, the women, children, and Winterfell folks not up for fighting huddled together in the crypts, the place hyped as the “safest” place which was actually not at all safe considering the enemy can literally rise corpses by simply raising his hands. Didn’t think that one through, y’all.

But not all children were hiding in the crypts. Lyanna Mormont went out like the badass little Lord she was, in the hand of a wight giant who was crushing her to death as she raised her dragon glass and stabbed him right in the eye. Her heroic end broke the hearts of every single one of us — and we won’t ever forget her.

Melisandre’s unexpected brand of heroism and loyalty definitely wasn’t lost on the Thrones fans of Twitter.

The episode was magnificent, I loved seeing crusty ancient Melisandre one more time

Overall, people weren’t very thrilled with the Dragon Queen’s contribution to the war.
People who did a better job than Daenerys tonight:
-Sansa
-Melisandre
-The Night King
-Sleepytime nap boy “I’m ‘warging’“ Bran
-The wind
-The White Walker who ran after the book that Arya threw in the library— Emily Yoshida (@emilyyoshida) April 29, 2019

Yes, even her try at the Night King didn’t exactly help. Dany gave him one long fire blast from Drogon that ultimately proved worthless. Somehow, Twitter still made it funny.

And then, our girl Arya.
First things first, we cannot stop thinking about how much we loved her big moment taking out the Night King and even HBO understands.

After spending her entire adolescence literally waiting for this moment, Arya came through to end the war in a single and glorious stab.

Of course now, we’re all gearing up for next week when we can return to fighting between Houses of only living humans, not walking dead. People are pretty pumped for a hotly-anticipated Arya/Cersei showdown.

Hopefully, next week’s episode will be less stressful but knowing this show, nothing and no one is sacred. Maybe “not today” but next weekend, the end could be coming for some of our faves. For now, we will watch that last scene on repeat and enjoy this happiness while it lasts.
